The place you DON'T want to use it is at the pump. It wouldn't be an issue if we had proper chip and pin, but nope.
Around here such things don't happen, you always use the card yourself everywhere. Wouldn't give out the card anyway, it's my card and my business what I do with it.
If you are that paranoid, you can always walk up to the host stand or bar.
Still I just wouldn't trust anyone with my card. Luckily these days I'm paying with my phone so I kinda need a little terminal to pay with.
Another tip for people. If you have a card linked to an account keep an extra account where you keep most of your money in and only transfer the amount you might need to use for a week.
This way if someone gets hold of your card they'll only be able to take that much where as the rest of the money is still on another account.
It's more fiddly but if something bad happens the damage is far less. I'm sure your local bank can do this for you without much of a problem.
Is that an American thing? Where I live this is unheard of
Tap to pay doesn't require a PIN. But there's a total limit, usually $100 or so.
It's spoofed to look like an Itunes purchase. I'm sure the bank can trace it but it's probably a temp account that gets emptied via online transfer and there's plenty of ways to spoof an IP address.
Because it should be:
PSA: Don't go to [place] and give the waiter your card.
