No?
Do wheels manufacturers get a share of car sales because cars have their wheels?

Well.. actually. Yes. If a wheel/tyre manufacture supplies a car company its tyres or wheels.. yes they get a share of the profits. They don't give them the wheels for free :-).

They don't profit from it directly, but they do profit from car sales. If it weren't for car manufacturers, wheel manufacturers wouldn't have a business(though plenty of other industries use wheels, that's beside the point), and if wheels weren't supplied with the car by the manufacturer then the consumer would set out to acquire their own so they can actually drive the vehicle.

I think the same concept applies to gaming. Microsoft doesn't directly profit from game sales in general(excluding xbox & MS game studio) but there's alot of games that only support windows. A gaming enthusiast will probably buy a license for windows to be able to play the games they want to play or use the software they want to use. Similar story with consoles - there are plenty of exclusive titles for consoles and there are alot of people that buy consoles solely to be able to play those titles.

I think you didnt get what i was saying.
Wheels manufacturers dont profit from car SALES.
They get their revenue from the car manufacturer, yes, period, the car manufacturer has money destined to get wheels/paint/insertanythinghere.
But, paint/wheels/anything dont get anything when a car is sold.
So, Microsoft doesnt get a penny when a game is sold. Yes, they get money because you need Microsoft to run a lot of games, but nothing when a game is sold.

Thats pretty sad as all these games which we play are on Windows PC but still they don't get their share of profit :(

Is it also sad that Dell, HP, IBM, and the like don't get as share of the profits too?

I'll stick with the car metaphor. Expecting Microsoft to get a cut would be like expecting your corner gas station to get a cut of the car sellers profits due to the fact that your car needs their gas to run.

Why would Microsoft get a cut anyways if they didn't make it or contribute at all?

I don't get why everyone thinks this is a silly question. Windows make money selling licenses to develop on it.

Woah, old thread guys!

There are zero licensing fees for publishing software for Microsoft Windows if that is what you are thinking of. If you publish in their Store then they do take a cut, and of course they profit from software they make.

You can actually get a free (for personal and small organization) version of their official development software at https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/
