Command And Conquer Generals Zero Hour Not Working [SOLVED]

I like the command and conquer series, but recently C&C Generals ZH stopped working! It was installed onto my computer a year ago and worked, fine until this month! I double click on the application and then it says "Access Denied Please login with administrator privileges and try again".

1. I am an admin.
   
2. This error never did show up until now.

I then went on the web to do some research on the topic and found out that for some reason windows 7 had some problems with folder permissions and it said to run the file as an administrator. So I did. I doubled click on the application like before, I clicked "yes" to run it as an administer but then nothing happened. No splash screen. No loading or black screens. No videos. No ERRORS! Then I ran the program again and view it in the task manager. According to the task manager the application was shown and then stopped and disappeared all within milliseconds. Then I did some more research and tried:

• Changing the Options.ini file to:

• Writing Shortcut Commands like -w -resolution, etc.
  
• Editing the Shortcut so it would run the programs as an administer, Running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service 2 and 3, disabling visual themes, desktop compression scaling on high DIP settings, Run in 256 colors, Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution.
  
• Checking Registry files in Regedit/
  
• Reinstalling the game.
  
• Making sure DirectX9.c is installed by downloading a copy from the web and also trying the DirectX installer on the disk.
  
• Tried checking the launcher files but since the application does not fully launch, no logs are made.

I do not know what left to try. I have even tried installing the latest patch but even that does not work.

Also one more thing, these applications have the same symptoms:

• Command And Conquer Generals
  
• Command And Conquer Red Alert 2
  
• The Sims
  
• Sim City 4

I have found the problem.

A program called SafeDisc DMR was disabled due to a windows update (KB3086255).
The website with the list of instructions of how to active SafeDisc DMR is located Here. [myonlinesecurity.co.uk] Or follow these steps.

WARNNING!
BE CAREFUL WHEN EDITING REGESTY FILE FOR THEY CAN MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER!

Open your start menu and search "run" without the "and click on the application called run.
Once it loads type regedit into the application and then click enter.
Then follow the folders until you reach this location.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\secdrv
Click on secdrv and then double-click on start
In the Value data box it might say 3 or 4. So type one of the following without the ":

• Type "4" Disable the driver’s service, and then click OK.
  
• Type "3" Sets the driver’s service to manual, and then click OK.
  
• Type "2" Sets the driver’s service to automatic, and then click OK.

Exit Registry Editor and then restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Now all the older games on your pc will work.

Are you having an error message? Because I did not have a message. Also this fix does not work on windows 10 since SafeDisc DMR was removed from the install.

I have been having the same problem I have the First Decade and TS seems to have the same problem.

I have not been able to find a solution for windows 10 (for now), since the SafeDisc DMR files were removed. But this fix worked for me on windows 7 and should work on windows 8/8.1, since SafeDisc DRM files should still be there.

tried the options.ini .. tried SRG_privite way of going to regedit ... copatibility mode exp 2 or 3 .. open as administrator.. nothing works.. my
C&C generals works fine .. but not zero hour.. any more suggestion ?

Or know of any videos/tutorials that will show me how to fix this so it launches on steam deck? It keeps asking for admin privileges I grant them then it says error on our end caused this launch to fail try again later.

I had it running through lutris then decided maybe that was the issue and why it wasn’t running so I have it standalone through the EA app now and it’s still the same asking for admin privileges. I’ve been researching all day and seen the DMR issues but I’m clueless how to fix that the way they show it for pc on a steam deck.

I’ve been trying to figure it out with no luck. No issues like this with other EA app games through the steam deck only this one.

My external cd drive hooked up to the deck on USB works just fine... some people's kids...

Looks like there is issues with the EA Play app. There was a post on reddit a while back about it: Anyone get any older C&C games running on the SD through EA app yet? (C&C Generals Help)

My suggestion would be trying to run it using the old Origin client (but looks like you might have to mess around with the DirectX install to get it working based from the Reddit post).

Otherwise, possibly installing GenTool[www.gentool.net] may also help as that can fix some DRM issues along with improve performance.

These are just some ideas and they may or may not work as I don't have a Steam Deck to test on :( (RIP Australia)

Some people's kids 😆. At least the guy below you actually posted practical help. I mean whats the point of a deck if you have to carry around a external cd drive and a disk just to play a game. No thanks but I appreciate your contributions.

Thanks for this. I will look into Gentool. I had it running before with your other suggestion but for some reason it would always make me re download Generals/Zero hour files or repair them. It would also have the pop up to switch to the ea app that I couldn't get rid of so that got frustrating having to re download or repair Gnerals/Zero hour everytime or the pop up. Time to go dive into some videos about gentool

Hey all so my command and conquer generals zero hour randomly started to black screen on the EA games start up then take me to my desk top. Not sure what is going on but its driving me wild I play this game every single day with no issues until now.
