A couple of years ago I had American friends come over, who insisted on going to Oktoberfest and while we were able to enter the area, we were unable to get a place in any of the tents (thankfully) so their reactions were: "We went to Oktoberfest and didn't manage to drink a single beer. ♥♥♥♥ you Oktoberfest".
Also the whole area was permeated with the smell of vomit and piss.
We then went on to go to a beergarden in Munich instead with more acceptable prices (still too expensive, because it is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Munich) and a more relaxed atmosphere and better air.
I recommend non-locals, who want to have a better experience to got to one of hundreds of smaller "Volksfeste" or "Kirchweihn" taking place over the year in Bavaria, usually serving local beer instead of the mass-produced industry garbage of Oktoberfest.

Also the people who like that cloying brown sugar-flavored cough syrup that's marketed as "Okoberfest Beer" in the USA. A good marzenbier is more dry and earthy.
