These days, I would only ever pay a recurring subscription fee if the developers continued to add new, substantial, content to the product.
DLC? No. Free expansions and content patches that are immediately included in the base pay-game.
For example - Elder Scrolls Online. You can pay a subcription fee and get all the new content as part of that. If you don't pay a sub fee, you have to buy that content individually and don't get access to things like a infinite-capacity crafting materials stash and the like, plus some other perks. I think ESO does the subscription-fee model "right."
But, games like Path of Exile exist, much to the dismay of big AAA devs/pubs. It's free. It's "expansion" in the form of quarterly content-rich Leagues, are free. It makes money by selling transmogs/skins and vanity items. (Once one buys up whatever Stash space/tabs they want, they never have to buy those again.)
GGG's monetization scheme for PoE is darn near perfect, both for gamers and their business. IF the game was more multiplayer/mmo'ish friendly, I'd think about paying for sub for it. But, as it is, it's exactly fine for what it is.
But I think I'd feel less inclined to want to pay a full upfront price if I'm also paying a monthly fee on top of that.
Also ideally the subscription should make purchasing cosmetics unnecessary and each cosmetic should actually found in game,, ideally tied to an item or object. I dislike this trend of trying to look cool but with low tier gear.
The subscription might drive some players away but one server for an mmo is enough. I don't need 100000 players and 20 servers to enjoy an mmorpg.
Sadly developers want profit so I have to compromise. But subscription based mmorpgs are not yet dead \o/
Else some players would play for free (maybe as streamers) without paying at all.
And their presence on the server would be supported by others who pay.
I think the presence of "free" players is not needed.
