Like others have warned though, in later years our center of gravity shifts to the middle making certain things more difficult. Skateboarding will def be a little harder then if you are a weightless kid.

If you don't then learn to fall forward - they wear knee and elbow pads with helmet for good reason.
Skateboard is cool, people still compete into there 50s easily enough. Just if you do be careful people don't bounce like they used to when growing up.
Online shopping will be less expensive for the safety gear but I would go to a shop first and ask for advice. In places like surf and skate shops the staff tend to be really helpful and more concerned in giving sound advice than making a sale so I would start there.
I got a skateboard for my 13th birthday in 1990 but I never learnt any tricks and when it broke a few weeks later I didn't replace it. It was very popular back then but only a small group of hardcore skaters made it a lifestyle and became insanely good using the best kit available.
