Do you miss generic fantasy games?
I don't mean generic fantasy in a bad way. Stuff like World of Warcraft vanilla, Oblivion, Heroes, Dark Messiah, Gothic. Where you got your classic spells, classic class archetypes, classic fantasy races, classic enemies, classic locations etc.

I played a bit of Dungeon Siege which I never played back in the day and I like the atmosphere. A reminder of the things we lost.

It feels like every fantasy game today tries to "be different" through who knows what. There is also the epidemic of Souls clones that have varying degrees of quality. I can't remember the last major title that was just a generic fantasy game.

Wizards and spell casters are asked to hire mercenaries to guard them since they are often not as great in fighting.

Wizards are often craftsmen who create magic items to their mercenaries.

It's not that Diablo 2 existing.

It has most of it, mercenaries to hire. But the skill aspect of having a character who may only know how to detect, disarm trappas and open chests is absent.

But that doesn’t make the specialist into a class.

They can be fighters who simply added lots of points into skills. Or wizards or clerics.

Oblivion > Skyrim

What the added classes did was removing the choice of the player as they were considered too stupid to understand.

Skyrim is closer to old school fantasy than oblivion and its horse armor scheme.

It's just that what if we took diablo 2 and added a group of 4 and then asked 1 of these characters to be a skill monkey.

We give you 3 classes but a sea of over 300+ skills for these 3 classes.

Fighter doesn't learn arcane or divine magic but instead is able to put these points into specialism of example a bow or anything else.

A wizard could as easy lesnr how to use a sword like a fighter at expense of their magic abilities.

I give an example of diablo 1

You can have a warrior who uses magic.

Początkowo opublikowane przez talemore:
Old school fantasy has a town with a blacksmith. Why isn't the blacksmith in the Dungeon fighting monsters is because he put all his skills into blacksmithing so he is rather useless in combat.
Men who made swords were sword smiths or armorers. Blacksmiths did some (very little) sword smithing. They were concerned with tools and other everyday items made of metal that people needed.
