Do you miss generic fantasy games?
I don't mean generic fantasy in a bad way. Stuff like World of Warcraft vanilla, Oblivion, Heroes, Dark Messiah, Gothic. Where you got your classic spells, classic class archetypes, classic fantasy races, classic enemies, classic locations etc.

I played a bit of Dungeon Siege which I never played back in the day and I like the atmosphere. A reminder of the things we lost.

It feels like every fantasy game today tries to "be different" through who knows what. There is also the epidemic of Souls clones that have varying degrees of quality. I can't remember the last major title that was just a generic fantasy game.

I don't mind games with traditional classes because that makes sense. But too many games are just turn based medieval fantasy clones. Like everyone loves BG3, but to me there are 100 games just like it. They all have pretty boring characters, boring stories and boring settings for the most part. Whereas something like WH40K Rogue Trader is far better for me because the story and the setting are great. You don't play some underdog hero trying to save the world, the game kinda sets you up more in the role of an unscrupulous dictator or war lord.
Not at all, you really need not look further then phone games. They are hands down some of the most grade A generic crapola I've ever really seen.
Diablo? OOoh three traditional classes including WIZARD.
What mind breaking class choices like another wizard

Everything else: Go enjoy some fetish of being a dwarf or ogre for some god unknown reason. lol

Miss them? Nah. Could use more creativity in fantasy. Give us goblins that aren't savages or vampires that aren't like vampires.

Goblins in might and magic 7 are savages since the elves shoot them in the back since they are too coward to face death with honor of the supreme authority of elves who stole their home and gave their castle to you as reward and is later asked to wipe out the pests out of their own home.

While you can have characters in your party who are Goblins, the task at hand to restore the castle who was burned down after the elves invaded their town and colonized the Goblin homeland who is holding vigilant against you in the last fortress outside the town. They have no chance against a party of gods who are to fight the Aliens and Dragons with laser guns.

As the angels were machines created by the ancient to battle against the Aliens. All we know the fight between the machines and the Angels is the mandate of heaven.

I just find that everyone thinks games are 'soulslike' now for whatever reason.

I don't care what game or genre. Ive seen games that just because you get armor upgrades some review will tell you. 'OMG you can change armor its souls like'.. or. 'OMG its a hard game, its def souls like'.. or, WOW this game is so dark and eerie, it def feels like its soulslike.

its stupid. OMG you only have so many lives in mario brothers on snes and when you die its game over. BROOOO thats a souls like game !!!!!

hello brainwashing, there you are.

nice job corporations, keep at it.

But that is souls-like.

In D&D a session doesn't end because you die.

You just respawn as your stepsister, Nerotic

exactly. TY for making my point.

in 2024 literally everything is soulslike for some reason. I have seen so many games spanning all genres be compared to being soulslike for the most inane reasons.

its such a brainwashed trend.

BRUH.. this game has a knight. he was evil and a bad ass.. totally was soulslike my boiiiis..

again, nice job corporations at brainwashing, its def working as intended.

:steamfacepalm:
No. Not because they're "generic" or "run off the mill", but because there is no shortage of them. If I get a fantasy itch, there's a plentiful selection of standard sword&magic games, old and new alike.

It all is about what is your goal with the game.

Might and magic copies D&D.

When you die you respawn but you lose all gold. But as example might and magic 6 start with the party dying.

There are worlds who are entered as you try to escape the eternal torment of forever living.

You can't die. That is why we have D&D inspired games like planescape:Torment.

This is maybe too nerdy and most wannabe D&D makes their games when you die the game ends. You can't die in D&D since the whole premise of the game is that you are on the path to heaven.

So you end up superstrong since you are a god. No, you don't think you are the god. But you'll end up fighting death.

Death ( The grim reaper) is a boss in D&D who you can defeat.

The grim reaper can't kill you. But you can kill everyone. Even if you wouldn't win, the eternal struggle of forever return once again makes you the devil of the world who the civilians have to make a game to occupy you from killing them.

Once of the most common boss is the Lich. What can the Lich do that nobody else can be doing is creating life.

In Souls-like games you die.

For what exactly? The point with the game is to escape the eternal torment of living forever.

Your skill tree is nothing else than forgotten knowledge. Since every time you respawn you lose some of your past strength.

As you can see all skills you can obtain, has already been established. The reason is that it is research of forgotten knowledge who makes a wizard into a wizard. But in the end the eternal torment of staying alive forever is a curse who you are to find: the gate of heaven.
Just play a Square Enix game.
I´m actually back to play Grim Dawn - so more the ARPG stuff. And before i went back to Kenshi.

Else i like the more complex systems as well - but somehow i don´t find any concept or work which really convinced me. Either they are too buggy or messed up (like QoL) - or they´re too casual and shallow. Usually more popular titles are all these combined: buggy, casual, shallow - but good graphics and sound effects.
Is Western fantasy just a bunch of copy paste? 🤔
Not really, I just wish there were more games like this:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/229480/Dungeons__Dragons_Chronicles_of_Mystara/

Only other game that comes to mind is Dragon's Crown, but I really don't like the progression in it. Taking a beat'em'up and turning it into an RPG is just not my plate of goulash.
"Fantasy" as a genre has always been generic in a derogatory way to me

No - but they´re usually somehow related to each other. So basically copy paste from either Greek or Norse mythology. And then there´s DnD - while this is probably the base for most western fantasy games in one way or the other.
