Magic The Gathering
Pokemon Red/ Blue/ Yellow/ Silver/ Gold/ Crystal.

That's where many people started with the genre.

Not on Steam though.
Somewhat more like Dragon Quest.

This is the epitome of what you want: no frills turn-based combat, and no deep or complex systems.

hardcore roguelike doesn't equate to new player friendly. :P

Then you probably won't like FTL
You can pause the game any time in battle. Effectively turn based, quite enjoyable but frustrating as well. If you get a successful run you really know it.

Anyway, check out the steam store page for this event and just read each one. You won't really know the difficulty until you launch it or read the frum comments.

Only Final Fantasy 1-3 are turn-based. The golden age of the series uses Active Time Battle (ATB) system, or variations of it.

Also, the Pixel Remasters cut out a lot and IV has a pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation. The 3D remakes or PSP complete collection are better.

ATB is still turn-based.
Final Fantasy 10.
So easy you don't actually needs brain to finish the game.
