There's definitely risks associated with people you've never met suddenly knowing about your existence for XYZ reason. It's inherent with people just being nuts. Online it can be even worse.
I think the overall risk level will depend what you're going viral for but in general it's not something that isn't manageable.
finally, popularity and relevance is back in the hands of corporations and out of the hands of individuals.
Benefits : if not some cash then an ego boost for some people.
Risks : an ego boost for others to take you down.
