Which formatting option is your favorite?
no more examples. I hate this. I need an out of steam text editor.

After reading more of this discussion, it warms my heart.

Some of you are young- and learning some skills that can have vast rewards later on in life.

Again, I also strongly advise not wasting them on places that have no reward.

Working is one skill. Getting rewarded is a whole other.

Emacs and Vim are both fine, as long as I can pull up a cheat sheet.

Well, you have to keep in mind that Steam's bbcode is limited. You can't use all bbcode that is available here in the forums, only what Steam has enabled, which is found from the Formatting Help link. So having extra bbcode options isn't going to work (if that is what you were wanting to do).

I'd alter the code. I ain't no programmer but it seemed like it had all of the options on steam, a bit more, could probably delete those.

Markdown is comfortable, bbCode is good as to not accidentally force users into formatting they don't want, without needing to know about escaping.
Someone should mix the 2 actually. Get the clarification of bbCode with the comfortability of using Markdown.

What are you wanting it to do exactly? Have a UI for all of the format elements so you don't have to type the bbcode out? Asking because I've been thinking of developing a customized external Steam editor, as perhaps a browser extension that allows instant pasting (so you don't have to copy/paste from the external editor to the Steam post area.

However, you can use 3rd party apps (either online or downloaded) such as TinyMCE or CKEditor and customize them to use Steam's BBCODE. That's a copy/paste method though as I don't think it can be integrated with Steam (unless either have a browser extension that would work for that purpose).

Now I understand all the beautifully formatted posts.

ORRRRR....how about an extension that integrates a WYSIWYG editor (such as TinyMCE) into the steam discussion forum, So when you create a new post, you actually see a UI for all of Steam's bbcode. It's just automatic. That way, no copy/pasting from an editor to the steam post. It's integrated into one. Looking into that now.

I guess I didn't really answer your question btw. No I don't want a ui. I'm think something like you write the bbcode and it formats in real time or you execute the code so it'll show you it. But no, I don't want some buttons to click so I can do it, I like writing it out.

And for the two recommendations, I (like I said) would like something integrated into a pre existing popular editor (eg vim, nano, or emacs).

I think I prefer having a seperate tab ngl.

Btw I had no idea before this that they used bbcode for all of the formatting thx

Integration seems cooler.
Also I thought I told you that before???

I'm not a programmer but I think editing the source code should be straight forward. I hope.

ah I see. You just want to have a preview of the output before it gets posted, is that right? If so, that's just a toggle. You could see the raw code in the editor box or see the actual result if posted (after bbcode is applied). That's common in editors in WordPress for example.

I guess it would be cool. But let's say your in a political forum and you need to shut everyone up because you are tired of all of the political forums. You would have to type out all of the text, plus format it so they can see your sources. I'd bet that staring at the steam tab would be tiring.
And I like the gruvbox theme and I don't know how you would integrate that with steam. soo.

Yep, I'd like to preview it. When I was writing this thread the text was glitched and I didn't know how to fix it in time.

Maybe a switch between each other? Integration seems more comfortable to me but I get your situation.

Right, like a toggle tab that shows you the post in the text window either in all bbcode or as the format the bbcode outputs. That's how I'm envisioning. Anway, I will start working on that tonight. Just adding it to the many other projects I need to get done. I'll need beta testers though, so if I'm able to get to the spot I hope and think I can get to, let me know if anyone is interested and I"ll send invites or we'll start up a STeam group.
