Frieren: Beyond journey's end.
People who watched it or read it, what are your thoughts? Masterpiece, overrated or somewhere in between?

I myself find it alright. It's not the best thing since sliced bread nor the best fantasy anime ever, but it's worthwhile. Interestingly enough, the side characters are a LOT more interesting than the main cast, as the main cast shows very little growth despite the long time skips. I don't mind slow-burning stories as well, so it's not a turn-off for me.

That's true I suppose. But that would have been a great second part of the story. If they made the current Frieren a sequel, it would be a really good way to tie loose ends to the story rather than leaving it all to exposition or have bad guys explaining why this or that happened.

Don't get me wrong. I like the show and currently reading the manga. But just really wanted to see fantasy shows start from the beginning and have a proper end that doesn't end in everyone getting along and the Hero and Demon Lord becomes best of friends.

Not sure if you've watched a semi-old anime called Ragnarok the animation (2004), and this is probably just nostalgia making me think it was good, but I remember it having proper pacing on how a fantasy story goes with a good old group of adventurers doing adventurer stuffs then in the end you fight GOD!!!!! Seriously speaking though, never was able to finish the anime so never got closure on that one, but got enough to a point that there was proper character development and plot progression. But hey, this is probably just nostalgia.

I watched something with Ragnarök in its name, but it had too much of a video game-like flavor. Did it have a sorceress with a blindfold as one of the characters?
Yep it did. And yes it was based on the Ragnarok Online videogame minus the ingame menus that you usually see in fantasy anime nowadays. Thank goodness Frieren was spared that ingame menu treatment as far as I know.

Yeah, that was a major turn-off for me in multiple anime, that "character sheet" as well as the isekai tropes. "Frieren" fortunately didn't tick those checkboxes. And I found it interesting because it's different from the over-the-top Slayers and it has a much slower and relaxed pace than "Record of Lodoss War".

I've heard good things about Record of Lodoss War way back then. Is it good? My selection of anime back then was pretty limited and didn't have a chance to watch it. And was just reminded of its existence now.

It's good by the genre's standards. DnD party embarks on a world-saving adventure. Main character is a growing underdog. A few plot-twists happen but nothing too outlandish. It's a little lacking in the coreography department, don't expect epic sword duels. I suggest the subbed version because of the excellent OST featuring a few numbers sung by Sakamoto Maaya.

Edit: he's one of the bad guys, but Ashram is my favourite character in it.

It's something good to pass the time. I won't call it your typical generic fantasy anime but my main problem with it is that it's (in my opinion) literally the end of her journey and she's just "passing" the time now.

Would have actually wanted to see her main adventures with Himmel in their quest in destroying the Demon King. I'm tired of anime/manga titles wherein the hero conveniently makes the Demon King (who's usually female) fall in love with them at the start, or skip the entire arc and makes the Demon King retire/reincarnate, so on so forth. I want to see the slow buildup of a group of adventurers make their way to the demon king and beat him/her in an actual fight, not the end of their journey where they're cleaning up leftovers.

I've been left wanting by too many anime titles, movies, series that always start at the hero's retirement or when they aren't in their prime anymore. I want to see them kicking butt and taking names during the prime of their life and slowly build up who they are.
the whole point is that that kind of story has been done before a billion times, frieren focuses on the part of these stories that is rarely told

Sub over dub any time. They sometimes mute the great BG music on dub which made me avoid them completely over the years. Thanks for sharing more info about the show.

Yep. That much I know. It's been done way to many times a long time ago. Note that it was long ago. And is now usually only limited to games nowadays which is still a rare theme. Nowadays, they're really milking the overpowered, convenient, isekai, online, predictable fantasy trope.

That's why I mentioned it would be great if Frieren had two parts. The first part with Himmel, and the sequel which is the current one. Frieren was such a refreshing fantasy anime compared to the over saturated themes of the current fantasy anime that it deserves to have both stories told.

I'd say masterpiece. The soundtrack is absolutely ethereal, the characters are all very good, the world-building is very good, the character design and art direction is incredibly good. Everything about it is just great.
It is basically a slice-of-life though so if you aren't into that you might not like it. Some people NEED a hero to fight a demon king in order to enjoy a show, and this doesn't have it.

Is it the greatest of all time? Nah. But it is really really really good.

OP seems like it has been confirmed the production of a 2nd season of Frieren!
I am watching it right now, it is OK, a little less action than I am used to, but at least there doesn't seem to be any annoying characters so far. It is nice to see a new anime that doesn't have people reincarnate in that world and be OP in 2 episodes.

I have finished it, it seems to be made slightly more of the female audience, with the male companion being the typical foolish character, but at least the girls have their moments as well. I doubt I'd rate it as high as ascendancy of a book worm, but it isn't a bad series.

Sounds like it's popular. Well, I'm waiting for the volume 13 of the manga to come out for the time being. Though I won't likely be able to get it before my next annual trip to Germany.
