Yeah, that was a major turn-off for me in multiple anime, that "character sheet" as well as the isekai tropes. "Frieren" fortunately didn't tick those checkboxes. And I found it interesting because it's different from the over-the-top Slayers and it has a much slower and relaxed pace than "Record of Lodoss War".
It's good by the genre's standards. DnD party embarks on a world-saving adventure. Main character is a growing underdog. A few plot-twists happen but nothing too outlandish. It's a little lacking in the coreography department, don't expect epic sword duels. I suggest the subbed version because of the excellent OST featuring a few numbers sung by Sakamoto Maaya.
Edit: he's one of the bad guys, but Ashram is my favourite character in it.
That's why I mentioned it would be great if Frieren had two parts. The first part with Himmel, and the sequel which is the current one. Frieren was such a refreshing fantasy anime compared to the over saturated themes of the current fantasy anime that it deserves to have both stories told.
It is basically a slice-of-life though so if you aren't into that you might not like it. Some people NEED a hero to fight a demon king in order to enjoy a show, and this doesn't have it.
Is it the greatest of all time? Nah. But it is really really really good.
I have finished it, it seems to be made slightly more of the female audience, with the male companion being the typical foolish character, but at least the girls have their moments as well. I doubt I'd rate it as high as ascendancy of a book worm, but it isn't a bad series.
Sounds like it's popular. Well, I'm waiting for the volume 13 of the manga to come out for the time being. Though I won't likely be able to get it before my next annual trip to Germany.
Actually, the true spelling of her name is Übel, which translates to "Evil" or "Vile".
