i like the art style, the pacing, the characters and the attention to their personalities and developments, i like the mix of humor and serious parts, as well as the overarching sentimentality and sense of thoughtfulness.
to summarize, that is.
i have not seen the anime yet, though, so i cant speak for its adaptation.
Might not be too far-fetched, given that good fantasy shows without the isekai tripe are few and far between.
I can think of a few competitors for that title, but not too many. Mostly "The Slayers" and "Record of Lodoss War". Then again, I may have missed a whole lot of good old-school fantasy anime.
Would have actually wanted to see her main adventures with Himmel in their quest in destroying the Demon King. I'm tired of anime/manga titles wherein the hero conveniently makes the Demon King (who's usually female) fall in love with them at the start, or skip the entire arc and makes the Demon King retire/reincarnate, so on so forth. I want to see the slow buildup of a group of adventurers make their way to the demon king and beat him/her in an actual fight, not the end of their journey where they're cleaning up leftovers.
I've been left wanting by too many anime titles, movies, series that always start at the hero's retirement or when they aren't in their prime anymore. I want to see them kicking butt and taking names during the prime of their life and slowly build up who they are.
Well, they left a whole bunch of actually powerful stragglers. Macht was literally outclassing them, as was Qual. Volume 12 ends with everyone, including Frieren, falling under influence of a pretty potent illusion spell. Seems like if the demon king's forces were actually consolidated, they would've decisively won.
Don't get me wrong. I like the show and currently reading the manga. But just really wanted to see fantasy shows start from the beginning and have a proper end that doesn't end in everyone getting along and the Hero and Demon Lord becomes best of friends.
Not sure if you've watched a semi-old anime called Ragnarok the animation (2004), and this is probably just nostalgia making me think it was good, but I remember it having proper pacing on how a fantasy story goes with a good old group of adventurers doing adventurer stuffs then in the end you fight GOD!!!!! Seriously speaking though, never was able to finish the anime so never got closure on that one, but got enough to a point that there was proper character development and plot progression. But hey, this is probably just nostalgia.
I watched something with Ragnarök in its name, but it had too much of a video game-like flavor. Did it have a sorceress with a blindfold as one of the characters?
