I guess I'm confused on how EA would have killed it then. Since EA didn't develop classic Battlefront 2. That was Pandemic Studios under Lucasarts.
the sale of the starwars videogame license to EA was already a done deal in 2005. sony only retained the rights to swg, the rest were in the hands of an equally-sized (in gaming) giant.
this was in response to a number of hostile acquisitions sony made over various properties the us' corporate interests didn't want to sell, hardliners tending to interpret the US as an inherently hostile entity to be exerted over rather than necessarily a diplomatic ally of current or future potential.
since the licenses were being stuffed up people's asses things kind of stopped happening with them.
Really??? That's weird. I mean I know SWTOR was published under EA. But then you also had stuff like the Force Unleashed releasing in 2008, published solely under Lucasarts. Also some of the handhelds like Lethal Alliance, Battlefront Renegade Squadron and Elite Squadron weren't published by EA either. They all came out after 2005. Pretty sure there are a few more too.
EA and others were into 'secret publishing' at the time. They'd fund a project and own the license to that individual product through a series of intermediaries, and then publish it under a different studio or publishing name. Lucasarts wasn't really doing anything but license squatting anymore, so this worked out for them. I hear the core FU dev team was about 50-60 lucas employees, about half of them admin, and about 100 EA employees of whom there were 1-2 admin contacts leading back to their own divisions at HQ.
Things changed after 2005-2006ish, as the first pre-emptive recession was happening in the wake of how the subprime mortage crisis had grown. Too many intermediaries, not enough understanding of what's happening.
As I understand it that's still a problem, despite corporate austerity.
Wow!! I can honestly say that I actually learned something today. Thank you! I was entirely under the impression that EA didn't start taking over until Disney acquired the IP.

you ever notice that there's no game adaptations of the resident evil movies?
disney bought the rights to a movie that wasn't finished and was encouraged not to compete with ea. which meant squatting on the movie, to maintain options.
and not releasing the game, to maintain options.
The US often finds itself with more options than choices, I've found.

Kind of off topic (ironic), but someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure Empire at War is the first and only strategy game to ever combine space and ground combat in a meaningful way, right? As in you have an equal amount of depth to the space and ground combat. Most space strategies games just focus on space combat while ground combat is often an afterthought.
I've yet to find a strategy game that combines both with equal depth as in Empire at War. But I'd love to know of some others that do!
