Were female custodes always a thing?

I recently watched The Tithe and the custodes turned out to be female which kinda surprised me as I was under the impression that the custodes were all male (I'm not trying to be sexist btw I'm just drawing from my limited knowledge from 40k and a few posts for and against this change). 'Nother question I have is can ladies actually be custodes as I know why they can't be space marines (gene seed and all that) but is there an actual reason why they, supposedly, cant be custodes? ( Again my knowledge on 40k is limited so forgive me if I don't know a few major lore points)

• Custodes are much closer to a Primarch rather than a Space Marine. They do not share a gene seed with anyone else, each is unique and rare.
  
• Custodes strength: They are to the space marines what those transhuman warrriors are to common guardsmen. an elite with raw strength and power that is just insurmountable. (a custodes can basically grab a space marine and ragdoll him.
  
• A primarch can have the edge in combat vs a custodes, but the gap in power is not that wide.
  
• A custodes also has the benefit of being nearly immune to the corruption of the warp, while average younger and journeyman space marines might fall victim.

so the process to create a custode is far more intense, and you just wouldn't combat evolve a specimen that won't develop as good of physical traits than on the sure bet. it plays on the physical and chemical differences between men and women.

women have a place in the 40k lore, so idk why the dei/fake outrage crowd is going nuts about it now. its been in place since circa 1987, so GW is just trying to strong-arm this and force it into the lore, rather than write it in naturally over time. and that makes ppl mad, when they had 30 years of really rich and evocative lore to read.

i dont really even play the game, but i like reading about it lol. its quite creative.

basically they were originally female, but for some reason the king decided they should be all male and also kind of gay. him being the 'emperor' and his custodes supposedly being of sexual interest to him, spiking his libidnial energy and lowering his daily sacrifices by a percent.

Probably not but GW has retconned almost everything over the years.

Space Marines used to be crazed psychopaths, criminals and drug addicts recruited from prisons (Starcraft Space Marines took their inspiration from Rogue Trader) before they suddenly became Space Paladins.

Necrons went from Space Terminators (the Arnold type) to Space Mummies.

Squats got extinct until they suddenly weren't extinct anymore. Or whatever their state is in lore, I lost track.

And I want to point out, that those changes usually are not a result of events in the timeline. 40kK timeline never progresses. The whole backstory gets retconned and Oceania has always been at war with East Asia.

The whole setting used to be a parody. But nowadays this flies over many peoples heads and we have 40K players, who flirt with fascism, because being a superhuman Space Marine and fighting evil Xenos Scum is kewl.
