Also fun just mucking about in maps against the bots. Decent bot settings. Ability to remove nukes that can kind of spoil things. I prefer to remove nukes so it isn't just a race to get nukes.
Playing with bots on maps after that is where you can use whatever rather than tech being limited to storyline.
The Homeworld games.
Impossible Creatures
Empire Earth Gold (GOG)
I prefer Forged Alliance.
I thought it was on the same game page as an add on to the game but steam has it as its own game.

starcraft
homeworld
dune
i think red alert
so you want world in conflict ?
Dune 1 and 2, obviously. The father of all RTS.

There was an old game called Crush, Kill and Destroy but it's as retro as the original Command and Conquer.
Btw, if you have enjoyed AoE and are into retro RTS games, you should give Empire Earth a try. You can only find it on gog, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’s like AoE but with 14 epochs.
Don’t bother with EE 2 & 3 though. They are garbage.
I see that it’s already been mentioned but you should give it a try.
There Warshift haven't played into it enough, but it's an RTS, as well you can control units 1st person.
Then there Planetary Annihilation which is little crazy neat since can have war across planets, or take out planets.

Played it, but the GOG version crashes when you start the mutant campaign. Also, the AI cheats way too much. I think I hit mission 8 or 9 with the Survivors where I just end up swamped with units on a much higher tech level than mine.
Played both Blizzard's classic RTS' back in the day. Where do I get Dune and how to prevent Worms from eating my Harvesters?
Will give EE a go, thanks for the heads-up!
I'll have a look, thanks for the input!
If so, They Are Billions (as mentioned)
and Diplomacy Is Not An Option.
Kohan
Warlords Battlecry
And actually best of all, Sacrifice
Branching campaign, Tim Curry and the rest of the best voice actors, massively underappreciated

And yes it's absolutely an RTS
