so instead of leaving them on default "rainbow swirl" you could (or should even, imo) set them to specific colors or ranges of colors with more subtle shifts, or even static color schemes, to blend into the overall interior design of the room it all sits in.
maybe you have green design elements in the room, so you set the keyboard to green as well.
or set it to a complementary color as an accent.
and so on.
google "rgb computer setup" and pick a level of extent that appeals to you, and then imagine whatever is in the photo is static (or semi-static) instead of a snapshot of a rainbow swirl.
you can tag something like "minimalistic" to the end of the search string to get some further ideas.
also keep in mind that lighting design needs not end at what can be plugged into and/or controlled by a computer.
things like LED light strips and such also exist and can be incorporated into the overall design of the room. you can put light strips behind some shelves, under a table, under a bed, etc.
i think at least M+KB not only could, but actually should be backlit since it just looks nice when done right, and makes typing in the dark a much more pleasant experience no matter your typing proficiency.
beyond that its all personal preference.
That being said: RGB on PC is a genuine waste of money (or a luxury purchase, at best), as mines are turned off by default.
PS: It also contributes additional heat and generates more electricity which is counter-productive, as minuscule as it is.
