Am I the only one sick and tired of "ultra realistic games and graphics"?
Maybe it's the state of the Silent Hill 2 Remake, but I've lately been out off by all these UE5 games and any other games that seem to aim for "ultra realistic graphics". I don't care about that anymore and I'm sick and tired of it. Games should be about GAMEPLAY.

And the ability to enjoy it without having to worry about having acceptable performance. If someone were to ask me why I might consider RDR1 for PC at $50 to be reasonable, its only because it's the ONLY title this year that accepts being a port that isn't focused on graphics but being as good as it was 14 years ago. All these remasters and remakes are starting to annoy me.

The focus on graphics seems to be lately at the detriment of gameplay and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. There was something charming about some old games in the past, namely how they focused on atmosphere and art style. It's why Half Life 2 is still as good a game as ever.

I wish some developers would purposefully release a retro or old looking graphics game, but make up for it in gameplay. There's a reason Doom is still popular to this day, despite being over 30 years old. Hell, look at Nintendo games. Mario isn't popular because he's "ultra realistic".

It's all about money. Make a higher end cards to sell and make graphically demanding games for it. [$(._.)$]
I'd need a different setup to even begin caring about max graphical fidelity.

There are some impressive demos cropping up though. If I get around to a real upgrade, I'm sure I'll be blown away.

Unless the games actually do stink, underneath it all...

Not a fan of Devil May Cry 5's uncanny valley faces.

Isn´t it basically only a graphical update to the game?

Also it´s mainly a Triple A / Mainstream thing. And in some forums, about really good games, the people complain about the graphics - so in the end they get what they ask for. Some AAA game might have one thousand gameplay issues and bugs, but the forums threads are about "The AA looks a bit too blurry - fix Your game." - i mean when they buy their $ 3,000 USD Dollars graphics cards, they probably want something which shows them that it was a good investment...

gameplay matters more then graphics

glad i'm not the only person who knows this

A lot of attempts at photorealism end up being ugly. Not just uncanny, but just not engaging.

I really liked the flat textures, minimal specular and normal mapping, of half life 2. Along with their very particular lighting, and movement system. So surreal, really sticks in the mind. Otherwise something like the original Mirror's Edge or Dead Space were peak. Deus Ex HR had good ambience but the whole thing with FXAA blurring and muddy textures diminished certain aspects of that ambience.

I'm still reminded of Alien Isolation. It's a game from 2010 that could still pass for modern day graphics, but it's optimization was almost magical. There is almost NO FPS drop or stutter in that game. Supposedly it's because the assets were custom and hand crafted rather than different levels of LOD. Meaning you could play it at a lower texture resolution and it wouldn't even look that different. But the art style nicely mimiced the movies' sci fi old school environments and technology. It's been a while since any recent game to come out has had the level of optimization that that game did.

Meaning something made with prebaked maps and rasterization could still look good, if the industry didn't emphasize UE5 and raytracing so much. We need more games like Life is Strange and less games like COD and Assassins Creed 9000. Hell, people can say what they want about Doom Eternal and the Id Tech engine, but at least Bethesda understood that gameplay matters more. And it's not like Eternal looked bad for a modern game.

I despise 'em too. Souless cashcow franchises, that's all.

It depends on the game tbh.

Some games I like nice graphics, others I like the art style.

There's a lot that goes into whether or not something is aesthetically pleasing.

If you want gameplay and not graphics, just don't play AAA games.

There's like 5 billion indie games.

EDIT: I'm not just saying this, most recently I've been playing

And yeah it runs in the Doom engine (more or less)

See this?

It's a fantastic game! It's a lot of fun and there's a heck of a lot to do - It's a "big" game with lots of crafting, base building, adventure, bosses and phat lewtz. Multiplayer too, if you want to do that. I've played it for a few weeks now and am in the middle of another game, but I will be returning to CK a bunch... It's just a darn well-done game. :)

Good games that aren't in the "Ultra-Realism" camp are out there... They're all over the place, really.
I merely don't care about them. There are many games with hand drawn or pixel art graphics coming out even today and in much greater numbers than "realistic" ones. It's just that most of them are not mainstream releases.

Here is a game that I feel will encapsulate OPs frustrations. I'm stating my opinion and placing a bet against this game succeeding.

I don't mind improving graphics, but yeah, trying to 1.1 reality in video games is a bit off putting to me. Video games were supposed to take you out of reality, not remind you. I'd rather have something high quality in an creative world like our own than something trying to emulate what I could go outside and enjoy for free and probably be less bored.
