There are calls to repeal Section 230. How will this affect Steam Discussions and Off Topic?

I have claimed in the past, this movement is gaining momentum. And it should be said, Hillary Clinton is an advisor to the Harris Campaign.

It should also be said, accordingst to the article. Mr Trump as well wants it abolished.

For the sake of disclosure, as people know me on the Off Topic, i am not back either of these candidates, Harris or Trump.

That being said, we continue to hear, "Steam can do what they want, on their property".

And in the article, that magazine feels this move, a 'risk to our first amendment'.

But does Steam promote or follow freedoms of speech? Evidently not, given moderation practices here. And it being "their property".

Therefore, why should it be freedoms of speech for me, but not for thee?

It seems Steam and other companies would fight this tooth and nail, given "their" freedoms of speech, being they can be sued as to what is posted, and responsible for what is posted.

But so can we get sued, as to "what happens on our own property". Mr Newell evidently is protected, in a way we are not.

I think Repealing Section 230 as Ms Clinton is proposing, is likely a fair proposal. Or in the least, major overhauls.

Companies obviously have the means to moderate, and protect their interests. In that protection, if they cannot allow us our freedoms of speech, neither should we allow they.

I know it's the weekend, and kind of boring here, but figured i'd put this up.

What protections does 230 provide that you do not have in your own home, exactly?

Valve can be sued for any reason. Saying otherwise is spreading misinformation. The difference between a homeowner and a private entity such as Valve is that your average homeowner in the US cannot afford a good lawyer and thus would be a target you could feasibly win against, even with a spurious lawsuit. Valve can afford good lawyers, and thus can have a spurious lawsuit thrown out of court or worse, make you pay for their legal fees.
