Musicians, what made you want to learn an instrument?
Just curious what made you want to do music. I sometimes want to learn an instrument but at the same time I also don't really listen to a lot of music from the instrument being used.

I don't really do music, but the bass sounds good because it's a important role in a lot of songs

Musicians, what made you want to learn an instrument?

I learned how to play the baritone for marching band in the 8th grade because of a pretty brunette I had a crush on who played the clarinet.

My father is a professional musician and I always liked the guitar. When I was little I got to try instruments, ie keyboards, guitar´s and such

Enjoying music+being creative is enough to make you want to play an instrument.

If I listen to a song I like, I will try to replicate the notes using a keyboard or (bass) guitar for ear training, which can be fun if you're into it.
For sure. I appreciate your input.

I had a keyboard when I was a toddler and always played on it, I used to play along to songs on TV and I really loved playing it.

my nanna offered to pay for piano tuition and I took it up and started learning piano from a young age and grew up loving music.

then I lost my hearing which made it harder and harder to improve, eventually I worked my way up grades and passed my grade 8 in piano since ABRSM offered me an alternative for marks since I have hearing loss so I was eligible to opt out of aural tests for another practical one, I passed with distinction.

Now I work as a session musician for an agency, clients hire me to compose and perform music for their needs.

I am working on a performance diploma for piano next as well as thinking of going freelance since I have not had a contract with my agency for a while but thats probably because of covid.

Well, I'm not really a musician, but I am a hobbyist. Had next to no experience with my instrument in 2019, but decided to try it anyways. The habit is still going, and according to my teacher, I have progressed a lot. Turns out anyone can learn to play, as long as you put your mind to it.

My advice to novices:

  • Learning large entities can be frightening; I propose taking it on in small chunks. If you're unsure whether or not it's your thing, account for this. Buy a cheap instrument first and upgrade it later, or see if you can borrow the instrument from somewhere.

  • Being a natural talent is not a requirement to get good; it will only speed up your learning. This means you'll have to put more effort and work into it, but eventually you'll achieve the same thing.

  • Take lessons from a music teacher. I cannot emphasize this enough. Having a teacher around motivates tremendously, as they will actively encourage you to get better (if they don't, SWITCH!!). You can also learn by yourself, but that can be difficult.

  • Last but not least; practice. You won't get better by doing nothing. As long as you remember to play your instrument, you will start noticing that you'll get better. Even as little as 10 minutes a day will develop your skills, as long as you keep up the habit.

It's never too late to try something new! Don't let your age stop you!

For me: I think in sound. I have an aural mind. I subconsciously memorise any and all noises. If I like a song, I immediately know every drum beat and every note and every word. The timbre, the feel, the sense of it, the rhythm(s). The voices. I even think in music, sometimes.

So I took up piano/keys as a kid and constantly corrected my teacher and the sheet music because it wasn't transcribed accurately. Then guitar, because my dad could teach me. Then bass, strings, and drums, because I was then old enough to teach myself.

The net result is I'm competent in a few categories, but not competent enough in them to get all the sounds out of my head and onto either paper or into recording.

But really, the lame reason I got into doing a music is because my dad is awesome. And an ex folk musician. So I grew up with him as a role model. But didn't quite make it...

Yours,
Me

Piano for reasons i dont care to explain
guitar my main, being part autistic it made the most pleasant sound and always loved metal so went hand in hand.
Bass just because was like guitar
Violin so I could teach my ex wife
Drums only a little, enough to make myself backing track sections

been producing music for a while but only recently picked up a midi keyboard, mostly because i want to play rave piano patterns instead of just drawing in the midi for them

Other great musicians (bass players) made me want to learn it. After hearing/feeling the funk I got hooked, 30 years later I am still going at it.
