Shadowrun Returns is imho not that great but an ok game
Dragon Age Origins is great.
Personally I would buy the new Divine divinity:)
I really, really like Shadowrun Returns. Love it to bits, top-down isometric cyberpunk goodness that it is. I would say get that, but only if you intend to buy the Dragonfall add-on pack as well. Otherwise DA:O alone is the safer bet.
I only played few hours of Shadowrun so far but seems quite interesting also.
Yes, the interface and graphics were much better. Combat? Deviates far too much from the Low-Fantasy setting they attempted with the first one.
Plot and characters where horribad though, and I hated that the game forced you to pick between two equally unlikeable factions that could have simply talked their differences through instead of engaging in a pointless civil war. Just nothing happens in that game.
But I agree, plot/setting was a bit lacking. Not a very good reason to skip the game though, especially if you plan to play Dragon Age Inquisition when it comes out.
Dragon Age Origins was marketed as low-fantasy, BioWare citing A Song of Ice and Fire as inspiration (the Human Noble origin was very Game-of-Throney). While it did have some of that low fantasy trapping, but they didn't go all the way with it, it didn't feel quite so cohesive - everyone talks about mages being so rare, but every other enemy is a Blood Mage for example. DA II pushed further into High-Fantasy, but it still had confidence issues about what it wants to be.
We'll see how much of DA:I relies on DA II, if DA II was anything to go on, probably not an lot.
