"Go woke, go broke" is a false narrative

So many gamers (tm) cried about Dragon Age Veilguard being woke and claiming that it wouldn't sell as a result. Well guess they were wrong. 80,000 players and it broke records for EA published games on Steam...

I think it originally had some truth to it, in that players don't like having to sit through the writing team's shallow, culture war-induced filibuster.

Nowadays though, "woke" seems to be shorthand for "contains women or minorities".

It was originally termed for media that would acknowledge social issues. As opposed to "sleeping" on them. But the right-wing trolls co-opted the term to act as their own dogwhistle, so they don't have to say the quiet part out loud.

This has been common knowledge for a while.

Woke makes billions. Anti-woke goes broke.

That's why they don't make their own movies and their own games -- they've made their own before and no one buys their stuff.

Yeah you're right. It's kind of funny, I can't think of any "anti-woke" movies off the top of my head given how insignificant they are.

The general gameplan tends to be that if a game is successful, talking heads walk back any discussion of a game being "woke" and pretend it never happened, while if the game fails then they blame it all on the game being woke ignoring factors that actually matter.

What I'm curious about is how they'll try to justify veilguard not being "woke" or it being fairly minor so they can memory hole them ever trying to grift on the game's "inevitable failure" from being "woke" when there's a whole quest behind being trans.

I don't think the AAA launch title having the same amount of concurrent players as a single-player 2 year old game is the level of success they were going for but hey, congratz to EA! It's gonna be really fun to see how many more of these they can last

lmao George Lucas has always been pretty progressive. I'm amazed that anyone would try to put Star Wars on the pedastal of being "anti-woke". That's truly hilarious. Were you blind and deaf while watching that movie?

George even stated that he had based much of the rebellion off the Viet Cong and the prequels made several references to Bush era politics.

Baldurs Gate 3 didn't have a ton of numbers either at release until gaming media and streamers wouldn't stop talking about it. Then it got people more interested. Especially those who had never played an RPG or any Baldurs Gate game before (who can blame them, the series is ancient).

I think it's going to go the same with Dragon Age Veilguard. Either way though, the gamers (tm) were crying about "woke this and woke that" and Dragon Age Veilguard has had a damn good release. I guess they were wrong.
