If you were to build a house...
...which room would be the biggest?
What material would you use?
Where would it be? On a hill, underwater...

my house would be in the middle of a forest.. near a small stream.. mountains in the distance.. and near a unhardend trail... but with the nearest small village of 1000 people like 50km one way... and the other way nothing but wilderness for over a day...

the walls would be of cut natural stone.. and wood..
and the roof be of straw....
parts be plastered white and roses would climb against one wall..

it would have a large garden.. part to grow food and part to just be beatifull flowers
and ofcourse thee would be a parth of stepping stones.. from the garden trough the woods to a small wooden pier.. not that the stream is deep or wide.. it barely reaches till your middle in rain season.. and barely your ankles in summer... but it's just deep anough you could have a little fun in it.. or for kids to play with a canoo or rubberboat in.

the inside would be somewhat dark but cosy.. small windows often high.. so light would fall in from above.. what windows it has are also antique.. and forged.. like old dutch farmhouses have..
you open the thick oakwood old door.. and you have an antique red tiled (like in old dutch farmers houses) floor troughout the house. on the groundflood.. the 2d floor its all oak beams floor.

the small hall about 2x2 meter.. is unheated.. and is where you take off your muddy shoes and place them in the rack and hang your jack.. than you come in trough the kitchen..

the kitchensurface is on the left side.. you moive though a narrow to the right. it is narrow first.. (with a door to 2d floor) and than gets wider.. for a cosy livingroom..

no tv.. cause this is a offgrid house.. but it has very cosy 2+5+3 sofa (an U shaped sofa sort of)
and a well stocked wooden cabinet with books and boardgame.. as well as a large dining table..

and a large tradional woodstove.. no not those ugly modern ones.. no one thats truelly an open fire... and you can even hang a cattle above it if you want to (but you don't have to..)

this stove is however modernised as in the chimney does not go up straight but goest more trough thewalls and 2d floor.. so that it will give of more heat for the amount burned..

there IS limited electricity despite being offgrid.. a waterwheal and windmilll both made off wood.. some crappy wiring..do supply limited power enough to light a few lightbullbs.. but not much other devices are in use. there is a special icecellar.. (thats filled with blocks of ice and staw in winter.. and due being deep.. + with stone walls such cellars tended to remain cold all summer..
but there might be an agregate on diesel (so can also work on any other oil) and an old clunker refrigerator just in case.. alongside a washing machine.. (for washing is the one thing that would really be to much work for my wife to do by hand)
the kitchen than mostly has an old woodstove oven.. which works fine...

as for sizes... well all i describe is tight.. as in you barely fit through.. doorways 2m high ceilings barely higher at 2.10m

walkways sometimes no more than 30cm wide.. everything crammed together nice and cosy..

total space.. hallway.. 7m2 kitchen 20m2 living room 45m2
if you open the door to the starts.. theres also a door to the toilet (we have a stream nearby.. we have fresh water.. and a way to get rid of sewage rigged up) and thus a more or less normal dutch flush toilet) up the stais are the bedrooms.. not that large.. but the beds are.. as in 2m by 2.2m bedframes and matrasses... and the rooms just big enough that you still can walk into them.. so perhaps 8m2 per bedroom.. with a clothing closet on one wall.. and perhaps a sink and mirror in each room..

ollenty of think pillows and blankets.. they may have little but they are ment to be cosy.

than a smaller chairs to the attick...

the attick basicly is a large room.. but it is divided a little.. under the lowerst part of the room we have made wood panels.. that can be removed.. begind them we store our stuff...

the large room is playroom for the kids and their toys are also stored in cabinets there...
there are also a couple larger cabinets for clothing storage... (with little space for them below.. most clothing will be kept here) I will also have a desk here.. with an old typewriter.. to write and a compgy leather chair to sit and read...

the whole size of this attick? maybe 60m2 but most of it will be very low.. due this being under the roof.. so only part of it is good for adults to stand

on the grounds is also a small wooden shed.. made of boards.. maybe.. 30m2 large..
this is where the batteries for power.. the generator for backup.. the fridge.. the washing machine.. and tools are stored.. (the food was stored under the house in the iceroom)

so basicly it would be a very comfortable cottage/farmhouse likely upper middleclass livings anno 1800 and placed something like in canada's woodlands...

The main tent. It would have 3 rings and be made mostly of canvas and wood.

I would build a house on a hill using stone, steel, and concrete construction. I'd limit the concert to the basement if possible, making it thick enough to easily support the structure above. The Basement would be the largest room due to the fact it would only have limited walls, but unlike most basements it would have a fairly high ceiling. It would have steal I-beams as the interior structure allowing larger rooms than traditional houses. The outside would be limestone blocks, and if possible a slate roof.

Now I just need to win the lottery to afford such a house.

I'm actually building one currently (final planning stages).

Steel framed with brick structure. The biggest room would be the lounge room which is an opened space to the kitchen. I prefer flat land as elevations and depth are hazardous to nature such as wind exposure or flooding.

As someone who used to build houses in the rich neighborhood of Nashville I can tell you this ...

DO NOT EVER skimp on materials or cost. You have to live in that house. Make sure you build it to last.

Also make sure if you can't build it yourself find a competent home builder. For those of you who think math stops after you get out of high school or college you are in for a big surprise ...

If it was any size, I'd have a large room near the entrance that would serve as something of a recreational area. That would be the largest. I don't need a large kitchen, don't need a large bathroom, and I don't even need a large bedroom if all I use it for is sleep and storing clothes. But I would like to have a nice area I could maybe put some arcade cabinets, pinball tables, pool table, a place for playing board and card games.

I would build it out of wood, possibly timber framing. Or I would use steel beams for the frame and go for something more tech heavy.

Depends on how much you win. Solid thing. :dronelike:

It's the most important room for sure. :bwl_fruit: Open or closed?

Not sure about the flat land, but nice. What is the external structure like? Flat roof?

That sounds amazing. A setup of my taste. :steamhappy:

Cut into a hillside. Back garden at the top of the house, driveway leading to parking on the bottom floor / basement. Each floor would be staggered. There would be a large water feature in the back yard with a glass bottom which would act as a sunlight for the top floor of the house. Most of the house would be steel and concrete to shutter the earth, the faces would be steel and glass with staggered terraced and balconies.
This is wonderful too. Maybe a winter garden?

Maybe, but I've been exploring reel-to-reel audio formats lately as well. If I lived in the climate for it, I would have a lot of my home be built in an outdoor space, including an outdoor kitchen that would have a brick oven and a grill too.

The foundation would have to be on Christ, of course.

From there it would probably depend the needs of my loved ones, and if any plans for future loved ones.

Underground sub 300ft. Megalithic in contruction and chambered with thousands of passageways and rooms, the largest being the grand prayer hall; its ceiling height somewhere around 75ft with the length extending out over an uncharted chasm into which the underground river falls in an endless echoing roar of rushing water.
