I guess the controllers ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and disabled some ET drones and then realized they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up as they couldn't recover them before people caught wind of it so now they have to bring forth more of those drones in order to control the situation. Turn it into fake alien invasion.

There is other unusual stuff going on like communication disruptions and technical difficulties. Mass cellphone outage in Denmark. Trains were stopped for a while. CERN reportedly keeps failing (Denmark is founding member of CERN). So looks like someone is running interference to stop CERN from bringing more crap unto the Earth. Earth-side would naturally try to stop that interference by disabling foreign craft in airspace. They can't just use conventional weapons like rockets and artillery because it would be seen and heard.
Most of the warfare is expected to be waged by EMW-weapons (Directed Energy Weapons). Stuff not visible to the naked eye in small scale application. But you get those technical difficulties as side effect.
