The Mermaid Thread 🧜‍♀️
What are your thoughts on these majestic creatures of the deep? Could they be real? (or have been inspired by encounters with real animals) What is your favorite depiction of mermaids in the arts and/or media? Does the prevalence of mermaid legends across multiple civilizational mythologies have any anthropological meaning? Do they make for good sushi?

Yeah, she was yummy. It's worth noting that we sirens have been known to prey on distracted sailors from time to time; cannibalizing our own really isn't that much of a step up. 🔪🍣

They never sounded like mythical creatures that were of fantasy, except perhaps to men who like the idea of having women "kept."

They didn't seem free and when they opened their mouths it was for destruction. It is the antithesis of women. Women bring life to this world, not death.
You underestimate the remarkable potential of women

To our core we are life bringers.
Men know of destruction, women of life; together we bring forth creation.

The presence of a navel (belly button) in most depictions of mermaids suggest they have umbilical cords and reproduce via live birth similarly to whales and dolphins. Rest assured, all the mermaid art you'll find on the not-so-savory parts of the interwebs is 100% lore friendly.

Anyway, there have been other mythical creatures I found more interesting than mermaids. Like I said, they always seemed very restricted.
Restricted in what way? The archetype they inhabit in most folklore seems pretty liberated to me, representing the feminine as a force of nature in its own right and not something that can be subjugated easily.

It sounded kinda cool as a kid, but as an adult I question who conjured the idea up and why...

What kind of fetish did the person have and why it's popular, but hey... :sldmuggles:

Will it make good sushi? Fish part maybe, but I heard human meat is similar to pork. So, bacon sushi?

Either way, I bet this lady and her club would love to try it.

Evolved from sirens of greek myth. Evil man-eating monsters. They must be contained and pacified.

Also reminds me that I once saw a mermaid statue when my family was driving by the coast.
I thought it was real and child nargo was traumatized.

Farewell, farewell! but this I tell
To thee, thou Wedding-Guest!
He prayeth well, who loveth well
Both man and bird and beast.

He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all.

The Mariner, whose eye is bright,
Whose beard with age is hoar,
Is gone: and now the Wedding-Guest
Turned from the bridegroom's door.

He went like one that hath been stunned,
And is of sense forlorn:
A sadder and a wiser man,
He rose the morrow morn.

Bacon sushi doesn't sound that bad, actually~

Not evil, just inhabiting an axis of morality that doesn't happen to be parallel with those of most humans. That was me who gave you a scare btw, the statue was real.

Mm, I mean restricted to water, even their bodies seem that way. You've worn mermaid dresses or skirts, no? They're basically long pencil skirts.
I like that though, feminine force of nature. I might look more into them later, thanks!
Haven't worn a mermaid costume yet, but I want to; I hear they're very hard to swim around in, though. Lots of mythological creatures and deities across various cultures evolved as proxies for forces of nature for use in storytelling, and tales of siren/mermaid attacks might have come about as a way to embellish accounts of seafaring vessels not returning to port.

I think there might be some anthropological significance to the prevalence of mermaid legends across cultures. Perhaps it's because humans have always been fascinated by the unknown? Especially the mystical and the slightly-scary-but-also-attractive ocean creatures that lurk beneath the surface.

For sushi, they'd be far too majestic, too mythical, and too busy swimming with their fins (or tails?) to bother with raw fish and soy sauce.
