Achtshully...
Online Only is much more than some form of "copy protection." It's a captive audience and usually a front-end for a marketplace. It would exist even if games were 100% foolproof copy-protected.
Online only also helps leach engagement from the distributor's site to the pub/dev's. Since it may also require a login and third-party account registration... once you're in, they've got you... everything is in place for them to capture audience share and push marketing, in-game purchases, game announcements, social meda/forums, etc.
PS: Just in case - This is just about practicalities and natural evolution, not in any way some support of yo-ho-ho'ing. I am against all forms of piracy and copyright infringement.
The flip side of the coin is those that attempt to heavily monetize their games and capture the whale. Not caring for volume and pleasing the masses but the few who will give them money exponentially more that the product is valued by most.
Steam has mostly helped achieve a happy medium though gone are the 75% off sales of AAA games and we are down to 50%. And our backlogs are insane and mostly unplayed.
you have no idea what you are talking about.....we are in this limbo do to things like GTA 5 and FARTLITE making a billion dollars each on selling skins
just no.....wont buy any game until i played it....its that simple.....
Just like He did with the money changers.
Well I mean first of all, your alternative to a crappy deal is not accepting crappy terms.
Second of all, Sellers set prices. You accept or decline the prices according to whether you'd rather have the deal on offer or the money.
Third, there are better deals on offer Good ol' Games, Humble Store and Itch.io give you access to D.R.M. free games you can back up, Moreover, you could just stop buying games online altogether and just buy physical copies and have statutory resale rights too. Buy the games with the purchasing conditions you like. Eschew the games with the purchasing conditions you dislike. Widespread adoption of such practices is the only way the industry will learn what deals are acceptable or unacceptable.
Finally, if two parties can't come to agreeable terms, that doesn't entitle one party to just take what they want from the other. In that case you abstain from playing. Believe it or not, video games are not a necessity like food, water, air, clothing or shelter. You won't die if you don't get to play Stellar Gate Wukongtro World.
Pirates are just looking for any reason to use as an excuse to commit piracy, when there is none.
You can't sell something that's effectively free, so in a world that condones piracy that advertisement is worthless. Also, if they want to let you try the game before you buy it; they can provide a demo.
Pirates are just a convenient boogeyman to throw around when people need an excuse for something, like when a game fails to be a success, company loses money, etc. Nobody wants to admit it's their own fault when they push out a trash product or make stupid business decisions that hurt the bottom line. Pirates will always be there to take the blame lol.
Ctrl+V
o no.
things like boulders gate 3 really drives this home.....good games wont have issues regardless of pirates......
