Playing the Sega Genesis original for the first time. I was always a Super Nintendo, Mario kid. How do you play this game? Are you supposed to roll through the whole thing at the speed of light or are you actually supposed to take your time and jump on stuff and explore the level, like in Mario?

When sonic is on the screen and waving his finger press up down left right quickly you will hear a ring sound then hold a and press start to get the level select.

You have to beat my green hill act 1 time of 21 seconds.

Sonic 1 is based on the philosophy of "Speed is a result of skill and knowledge, not handed to you on a silver platter". This was lost with...pretty much every game after it, but the original game is set up so you can breeze through it, but only if you know the level layouts well enough to do so.

Learn the levels, go fast. Don't learn the levels, and you will be punished accordingly. If you want to go fast, this game does not accept sloppy play as an acceptable answer.

2d sonic be weird like that. I feel like Pizza tower is just sonic but better. It's less of a platformer and more of a dynamic obstacle-course requiring a bit more brain power and inputs, rather than just holding down left or right and occasionally holding down on the dpad/joystick. Then you have to come to a complete halt when doing some platforming. 3d sonic suffers from the same issues and more as it just does away with arena/platform segments entirely just to be only be fast-paced fixed path running. Call me a hater.

I like how the Japanese manual explains that Doctor Eggman used to be friends with Sonic until a lab experiment turned him into Doctor Robotnik, and that's why he puts uses animals to power the machines he sells to the military industrial complex. Who wouldn't turn to ecoterrorism when their buddy ODs on ketamine, only to turn the local wildlife into zero point generators meant to power drones and prolong proxy wars?

Never mind that the setting has the same issue Mickey Mouse cartoons have in that he owns a dog and Goofy just ignores the blatant chattel slavery going on right in front of him. Only there's no chattel slavery, just a pants shortage and magic rocks.

Seriously the lore is actually kind of interesting when you think about it.
