Kart racers with real world cars?
Yeah, I know Activision will never revive Blur, but a part of me wonders if vehicular combat games like Twisted Metal and Carmageddon were brought back to like, they'd likely need some form of a racing mode since that's the most familiar game mode in a game that's primarily about driving cars.

Though, if one were to make a game that is described as "Twisted metal with a racing mode", wouldn't that just be another form of kart racer, except with licensed vehicles replacing the generic go-karts?

Sure, you'd have a starting weapon (often a pair 9mm SMGs welded to your hood) instead of picking up a straight-shooting projectile as a power-up, though anything beefier than a pair of Uzis would likely need to be pickups that you drive over, which could probably have their analogues to a more family-friendly counterpart. Thinking on it now, why not have a more violent racing game with makeshift weapons and real life cars be the next kart racer that's not Mario Kart instead of trying to trying to copy Mario Kart's formula 1:1?

Something like Full Auto or Full Auto 2: Battlelines? They were more racing-focused vehicular combat games that played pretty well.

They weren't really cart racers though, there was more of a Need for Speed or Burnout vibe, imo. (very weirdly Full Auto released only on 360 and Full Auto 2 released only on ps3, lmao)
heres a random gameplay:

I feel like those would be the type of games that'd be dismissed as "mario kart clone". I imagine slapping on a racing mode to a legally distinct Twisted Metal and making it the primary form of play would probably come off as edgy to some, but I feel like mechanically speaking, the driving and weapon mechanics would do enough to differentiate itself from the typical kart racer.

Though the biggest challenge then would be to convince Toyota to agree to a licensing deal for a game where their Supra can lose to a Ford F250 in a race because better starting gun and also having more health.

So what? There isn't even a "Mario Kart" on Steam.

Also, it seems bazillions of shooters sell just fine, even though they are all Doom clones.

Par of the humor behind Twisted Metal is that it's way too dangerous to implement in real life and egregiously offensive to pit people against each-other in life threatening gladiatorial combat just for sport. Twisted Metal is only acceptable because it is fiction. The closest thing to Twisted Metal you can have in real life is Robot Wars, which is kind of like Twisted Metal Small Brawl in that the vehicles are operated via R.C.

The best system you could have for people actually operating the vehicle is possibly borrowed from Mario Kart.

Instead of trying to destroy the vehicle you destroy balloons or have some other way of scoring damage that doesn't actually damage the vehicle. Once you run out of balloons or whatever, that vehicle is out. Even that is kind of iffy though.

That one or BallisticNG for a sci-fi fast paced racer with combat. https://store.steampowered.com/app/473770/BallisticNG/

Or GRIP. https://store.steampowered.com/app/396900/GRIP_Combat_Racing/

Part of why I made this thread was the idea of adding a racing mode to a vehicular combat game, which then made me wonder if doing exactly that would turn a vehicle-based team deathmatch game into an edgy-as-♥♥♥♥ kart racer.
