How realistic is a AAA videogame crash in the next years?
Game development has been kinda meh in these years but AAAs have been hit really hard in 2023-2024. The labour issues in the gaming industry rn make me want to stick to software engineering despite not liking the career taht much

I imagine all those magic graphical/programming skills would still be put to good use in military simulations. The technology certainly won't die, but civilians might get bored with the nonsense in consumer 'games', if you still want to call them that.

The military would love to have a modified unreal 5 to nuke more kids in yemen <3... Wait probably Epic collaborates with the US Army rn

i think a crash is inevitable but in a smaller scope compared to the big one during the dark age of atari. at least the AAA industry will fall apart but indies and mid level studios will get off relatively fine and might even cause a golden age. not to mention the rise of the retro industry by the way of revival consoles like the evercade or that retro console series

No one should actually care what others think anyways - just build the game but keep it within legal guidelines - but too many extremists are on Earth atm - if more people were rebellious, there would be no corruption but fear drives masses into protective groups.

Allow me to introduce you to what happens when traditional game programmers are assigned to build a military simulator...

All those devs that worked on making those games got paid even though the games were cancelled and hundreds of millions of dollars were dumped into them.

Some big dev-pubs are looking at focusing on "more and cheaper" games. There's an argument to be made for a healthy production volume in both sorts, IMO.

But, the smaller studios have repeatedly shown the AAA industry the way... "Make Good Games." It's kind of simple and instead of hyping up investors by touting multi-bajillions-monies projects, maybe they could just come up with... good games?

I think the future is fine as far as the consumer is concerned in terms of product to market.

But, other issues might come up, like the use of AI, streaming, more controversy over in-game purchases, gambling, etc.

if hoyo games for example are considered aaa games soooo.... will genshin, zzz or honkai also collapse??

i also hate how expensive and harder to run games have become, for example they for some reason just over use the hell out of realistic real time lighting in games that have no day or night cycles (why?)

Not realistic at all. The AAA industry will adapt and go on, leaving those of us who whine about things behind.

Nah.

We might see a dip eventually but there is too much drones out there just buying the new hot ♥♥♥♥ on a whim to see a real crash.

that's why i think a video game crash would be on a much smaller scope compared to last time. the industry is much more diverse and complex compared to back in the day, so i'd imagine at least some studios can survive the coming storm especially in a more insular market like china where their own product is respected
