Bethesda and Bioware used to make good games. Now Larian and Obsidian are the only ones who can put out decent games.

Yes I know that.
As a gamer, I enjoy playing games vanilla rather than with mods or hacks.
I'm a tinkerer by nature, so I enjoy dissecting systems and then figuring out how to navigate them towards the best path for victory and success for myself.

I have no interest in cheating the system, that's too easy to do and I'll get bored too easily. It's more satisfying to me to beat the game and the system at its own game within its own boundaries.

the main problem with modern Western RPGs (and movies, for that matter), is the incessant need to "subvert expectations".

The Last of Us 2 killed my enthusiasm for triple-A western games. Joel was killed purely for shock, and Abby was shoehorned into the game even though everyone hated her. Then they turned Ellie into a lesbian for some sweet DEI points and BlackRock money (there was ZERO hint of her being a lesbian in the first game, and only made her come out in the underage fetish DLC). Ick.

I've also seen other franchises like Terminator, Star Wars, Star Trek etc get killed by awful writing and activism. If you invested yourself into any of these western franchises and watched them get butchered and zombified, you felt like an idiot.

So I don't invest my time and money into western titles anymore. It's only indie or eastern titles for me.

Hence the op's whole thread.. You explained it in a nut shell..

The main reason is fanatical groups of left wing devs got into the industry and fell through jobs upwards to positions of power.

They then seeded their friends and like minded people through the industries while removing anyone they disliked even if they were best for the jobs, till we fast forward to now a decade later.. Where everything is so infected with woke minded staff that no one can get anything normal done anymore..

Toxic positivity, HR departments and companies like Sweet baby are prolific all through media governments and corporations.. Losing billions over activism..

Game development and creation is a business, first and foremost.
It's a business, not an art.
Historically speaking if you look back at old arcade and casino games, like traditional arcade and casino games from long before the digital era, yeah, they're made to be a money collector machine, a business machine.
Ever play Ski Ball? I really don't think anybody who developed Ski Ball was like: "I've got an idea, I'm going to make an art project where you roll a ball down a pathway, it hits a bump, pops up, and falls into one of several holes."

True, there IS an art TO IT, but the reason it became a business is that it's sort of mechanically designed to be business-relative.
There's DEFINITELY art to it, I mean, play any modern video game and I don't think anybody will disagree that the graphics look amazing, even if they don't necessarily like said game's art style.

But game development itself and the creation of a game, is business-based.
Even War Games, is strategic AND business-designed through marketing to be appealing...and War Games are some of the oldest games we even know about.

So when it comes to Western RPGs, yeah, there's definitely a financial incentive.
Western Culture in general is very heavily influenced by financial incentives.
Money is the new world's God, basically. At least, in the West.

It is around the world not just the West. Everyone needs to eat afterall
