You're using it to indicate the presence of a vowel. It's a vowel.

A vowel isn't a type of letter, it's a type of sound. Letters are just the way we represent sounds, but because it makes it easier to teach this stuff to six year olds, we say that certain letters "are" vowels when those letters represent vowels. When a Y is representing a vowel, it "is" a vowel in the exact same way that E "is" a vowel when it's representing a vowel.

The problem, such that there is one, is that it seems most people don't actually get any education on this kind of thing past about year 2, so they think that's all there is to it.
Well, I'm not a native English speaker, so I wouldn't really know. Thank you for your contribution! :)
