Haven't played it myself, but it seems to be one of the best FF games of all times. (based on various reviews across the Internet)
I guess anything between IV and IX is a good way to start. Being honest, not sure if you should play any FF aside these IV - IX era, since it's the actual bright moment of the series...
VII is the most popular but it's low poly aesthetics sort of scare younger players, so be aware. VI pc port have remastered graphics that fans hated, but could be a good idea for newcomers, or not. You could always wait for IX release.
Most fans are really on rage by the updated sprites from the mobile version. Some other people sort of liked tho. If it was good or not, depends entirely on point of view...

imo i didn't really care too much about the updated graphics, just think that battle hud is terrible. And lazy, since it's taken from mobile without any changes...
When it comes to Final Fantasy games it's reccomended you get the original versions. They're like Star Wars:They get "better" graphics when they get rereleased but actually look horrible.
It's getting a lot of positive reviews and it's the earliest game available in the series, so it's probably a good place to start.

Some numbered games have multiple parts or sequels, but there's no story/setting relationship between different numbers.
I is the original game, and a relatively basic but solid JRPG experience. Not on Steam.
II has some weird gameplay mechanics. Also first FF game with a story focus. Not on Steam either.
III is largely only recently known. I think its NES version is great but it only ever got a fan-translation.
IV is basically a staple SNES-era classic. Quite well-regarded.
V is best known for its very versatile job system and being noticeably harder than IV but giving the player a lot of gameplay depth with which to address that difficulty.
VI is probably regarded as having the best story in the entire series. A favorite of FF series fans, especially older ones.
VII is a staple of the PS1 era, and probably the most famous FF game. It might look odd today though because of its low-polygon style. Getting a remake done.
VIII is often panned by older fans but lauded by younger fans (usually the ones that came in at FFVII). I hear it has great story but some iffy gameplay design choices? I haven't played it.
IX is a "neoclassical" FF that incorporates elements from earlier games, and is probably why it's a favorite of the older crowd. Coming to Steam.
X is even more cinematic and pretty-looking and generally has a good reputation. Has a sequel in X-2. Rumored to be coming to Steam.
XI is an MMORPG. No idea if it's even on PC.
XII is an action RPG, I think. I think it has decent reviews. Not on PC.
XIII is on Steam, and in three parts. The first part is often panned, but the second and third parts seem better. Opinions seem rather divided; older fans seem to tend toward disliking it. (I'm personally curious to play it.)
XIV is another MMORPG, and I think this one's on Steam? I think it's on PC at least.
XV is upcoming.
None of the non-numbered FF games are on PC, sadly.
It's been a while since I played the DS version of FF3 but I remember difficulty spikes and having your stats lowered when you change classes.
I would reccomend starting with IV, VI or VII.
I really would go with FF6.
Tactics Advance (GBA) at the very least has an excellent soundtrack and pretty fun gameplay, even if the story is pretty rubbish. I haven't played Tactics A2 (DS). The original Tactics itself (PS1) is reportedly really good, even despite its rubbish translation, and the Lion War version (PSP) of it I've heard fixes the translation.
