Steam Refund Request Warning: Is it automated?
Earlier I recieved a warning that I was refunding too much recently and that I should look up games or whatever before purchasing them. Now, I just recieved this: You’ve requested a significant number of refunds recently. Please keep in mind that refunds are not a method for trying out games. If we think the refund system is being misused we’ll decline to grant future refunds.
Granted, it seems like it's automated because I've refunded only about 6 games in the past 6-8 months. All for technical issues, such as the game not starting up or crashing my computer. Now before you start bashing with this and that, you should know that before I buy any game I often ask friends about it, check reviews, watch gameplay videos, note the minimum requirements in connection to my hardware and look up current technical issues. When such an instance happens as stated above, I do everything in my power to get the game running, but obviously it doesn't work which is why they were refunded. Moreover, I always state specifically for the developer the causes of the issues, the crash_logs as well as what methods I attempted to use for trouble-shooting. I always thank them for looking the issue over and that either through an upgrade of my specs or an update on the part of developer, I am willing to repurchase the game.
I can't see how I would be abusing the services because as I've just stated above, I do everything within my power to check a game out, if there are any issues I try to find support, and I always refund within the 14 day period with gameplay under 2 hours. Obviously, under two hours as the games that are refunded usually crash on start up.
I've heard that a lot of games haven't yet upgraded for Windows 10 support, or are compatible with Intel graphics cards. But there is nothing on a game's support page to let me know that A) There is no Windows 10 support or B) That the game has difficulty with Intel. The games that I've refunded are (in this order):

Ark: Survival Evolved
Grim Fandango Remastered
Medieval Engineers
Hurtworld
Payday2 GOTY
Total War: Shogun 2

The issues with Ark were the frame rate count and crashing several times, which I'm aware of the game's poor optimization playing a factor. However, I refunded it just to be safe for a later date. Grim Fandango, Payday 2 & Total War: Shogun 2 simply wouldn't launch and Medieval Engineers had an issue with Directx11 and crashing on the main menu while Hurtworld caused my computer to overheat and crash.
So, do you think that my reasons for requesting refunds would qualify as using Steam as a demo provider? Again, I've purchased far more games for far greater prices than the games that were refunded and I always use the money refunded to purchase another game on Steam. So, I'm at a loss as to how technical issues could seem like spamming the refund process? As a late note, it appears to be that the ABUSE clause is horribly vague and should be specified to state what they consider as abuse. It would make more sense if I were doing this more than I've said and for different reasons. I mean I'm glad that Steam finally added an option to refund games because some games don't work properly. I had such an instance with the remastered Myst edition a year or two ago, and at that time was unable to refund it which resulted in having a broken and useless game in my library. I only use the refund process when after doing many trouble-shooting techniques fail to get the game running. If these games would simply start up it would be different, but most times they don't and there aren't any real ways to resolve them.
So what do you guys & gals think?

Also, I should mention that the Payday 2 GOTY edition included about 23 DLCs, would those DLCs be considered as independant requests or as part of the base game request?

Yes it is automated, and yes they watch how many you do, over a year. And yes they should flag you if you do more than a couple, to prevent exactly what they are pointing out.

And you did some returns on a few well covered games. Sorry your system couldn't run them. The games I wanted to site, (Grim, PD2, and TW Shogun) are a real shame. And confusing, since their fixes are easy and they run well on the PC equivalent of a Toaster now days..

Yea. 6 refunds seems like a lot. It IS there to help you, but they set up limits for a reason. Sorry you are hitting the limit, but I wholeheartedly approve of them limiting refunds. Just shop more wisely, I guess.

KK, Zero. I was just curious because with bulk sales like they're having right now you never know if you're going to get a rotten egg. Personally, I'm glad they incorporated refunds but I don't want to feel penalized for doing as they suggested as requesting a refund on a game that I simpl y cannot get to function properly or at all. And it is a shame because I only buy the games that I really want and wait until they finish downloading and installing which can take a long, long time. So, it's not something I take easy. If anything it's depressing to miss out on games like TW:S2 or Payday2. I mean I met the minimum requirements but it just seems like ever since I updated to Windows 10 that I've been horrible issues with games not working. It's making me paranoid to even buy anything anymore. Also, once I get my desktop a new wi-fi adapter hopefully it will decrease my chances of refunding a game that won't work on my laptop. Because it might work on my desktop instead. It's a shame really, but I expect them to understand and to oversee exceptions for people in my case that really can't help if a game doesn't work. I mean I bought Shogun 2 because I read the reviews stating that Rome 1 didn't work well with contemporary technology. So, I'm just at a total loss right now lol

Oh. Don't get me wrong. I am glad they have refunds for people. I am just the belligerent sort who makes sure my system stays optimum, or sticks with it till a game runs. Often long after I should.

I am glad they took care of you. But I still support limiting how many games can get returns, as well of the length of time they now dole out for returns. I am, weirdly enough, on both sides of the argument.

Shame about Payday 2 and Grim. Both those games are great.

:conwayshrug: Oh well.

I'm with you, I don't believe in abusing any of the services provided by Steam because Steam is extremely special in gaming. Yeah, I was super excited for Payday 2 and then it just would not launch and I tried everything I could for like 3 hours. Grim Fandango seemed to have a similar problem, I think both cases had something to do with either my graphics card or OS. Which makes no sense, because my specs met the minimum requirements. So crazy lol
