Best Realistic War Game
With all this Ukraine trench footage I'm getting the itch.

I have Rising Storm Vietnam but I need something fresh.

Arma 3 i guess, although i hear you need like a bazillion DLC to have fun with it

I've had an eye on WARNO, but it's leaning heavily into multi-player mechanics.

If they were realistic, they were "anti-war games".

Else - probably ArmA 3, but it´s not exactly fresh. They have a DLC which could be seen as anti-war though.

when i was a kid i played this vietnam war game on the xbox that was called "Shellshocked" or something like that. you were in the vietnam war and had to go through the jungles and swaps, there were booby traps everywhere. it was a really realistic representation of that war

here it is, i found it. not quite like i remember it being from when i was a kid, but still good

You are looking for milsim which are rarer than the average fps, with smaller communities, and large modding efforts. ARMA3 remains one of the superior choices, with Ready or Not and Squad also leaning heavily into realism. Also, possibly the new game, Enlisted but idk yet.

What do you seek in "realism?"

A grognard may gravitate directly to something like this:

https://news.usni.org/2013/09/24/game-review-command-worthy-successor-harpoon

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1076160/Command_Modern_Operations/

Being a HUGE "Harpoon" fan, this game would scratch that itch very well. I saw some play/footage of people gaming out some scenarios last week and it's... a very detail-oriented game, clearly a good next-gen modern successor to the Harpoon series.

But, that's a theatre-scale game.

Do you want a bigger or smaller scale?

For FPS/Action style combat, the Arma series is generally well regarded and is easily accessible for most gamers.

For "world conflict" that gets a bit tricky. For example, I think Hearts of Iron IV would be pretty good, but then again... it's Paradox, which means you'll have to get all the DLC to bring it up to the level of what a gamer considers to be a good commercial game.

For tabletop, I'm not familiar with much that has been produced outside of the '80's. :) I can't remember a game's name, atm, but the best tactical-level tabletop game I ever had, and still have in storage, is one at the squad level that models things like fatigue and moral with TBS elements akin to X-Com and cover mechanics, etc. It's heckin' great, but very old...

There's a tactical squad/company level game that does that, too. I don't know if it's the very first "Company of Heroes" games or something before that. "Company of Heroes" is a nice RTS, btw, just not very realistic.

This has some pretty good theatre/battle-level games listed in it:
https://avidwargamer.com/steam-sale-2021-guide-to-wargames/

This is a pretty cool subsim "wargame." But, before you buy... understand that lots of things not happening for a very long time and then something happening really, really, fast and loud... is what a subsim is. :)

"Cold Waters" looks pretty.

Warno (was mentioned above):

(There's another one I can't remember atm, even after watching hours of "Let's Plays" of the darn thing. A theatre&battle level campaign game, kind of RTS-like in graphics, but good unit diversity and resource management, mostly focused on WWII IIRC.)

So... what sort of "wargame" are you looking for? :)

Hell let loose I think

Squad would probably be your best bet these days for modern age combat.

Hell Let Loose/Squad 44 for WW2 action.

You could also try ARMA 3 or ARMA Reforger. Might require some modding and such but it works.

Honestly this sounds great and is very immersive haha. They need a remake pronto.
