Depends on what fish we're talking about though.
Personally, I can't do halibut.
Some of the species most commonly found in sushi include salmonella and various vibrio bacteria.
I like real sushi.
But, I'm not really fond of intestinal parasites. So, I don't eat a lot of sushi.

With all that mercury in his system, I'd think it was undercooked or contaminated fish and especially shellfish (clams/oysters) that was the problem.
