Supermarkets and Security
In the UK some supermarket chains have a policy of not confronting shop lifters.

Failure to adhere to this policy and the staff member/s can be fired.

What do you think about this?

Those of you with racist takes need to watch the news more. When I see these thefts, I'm not seeing many people that look like migrants. I'm seeing the same thugs we here in the US and UK have always had. Are you pretending the UK didn't have a problem before?
Another thing, if it's a supermarket, it's probably food. And if someone is stealing food, I'd be more biased into believing they needed it.

Not always...

People don’t approach shoplifters because it might not be worth it to get your hands dirty over something worth 5 dollars.

It shouldn’t be about money. It should be about principal and sending a message to other shoplifters.

Edit: That should be the job of security though.

The freedom of movement with Romania brought across a lot of criminals and benefit fraudsters.
The Romanian police in the 2000s warned the UK to bring its police force up to scratch to deal with the influx expected to happen, when the free movement suspension was lifted for Romanians into Britain.

This is NOT me saying its all Romanians, this is me saying why people in England blame migrants on crime, because there WAS a big surge.
From scams, begging, public nuisances, shoplifting, pickpocket/pickpocketing bags etc etc.

Then you have little clue about what is going on in the UK supermarkets.
Some people are hungry and there are a lot of food banks being used and they are stretched.

But bulk is not for hunger as such.
They should hire security then, problem solved.

The famous supermarket detective, someone who has the authority to make arrests.

Security can't actually arrest anyone. They can detain until actual officers come to investigate and possibly charge the criminal.

I worked at a walmart in my teens. We would hear them say "200 call electronics" or "200, pets please"... it always meant there was a shoplifter. They would get eyes on and play cat and mouse while we all collected up front to chase them if they ran. After a guy was drug by a car because he wouldn't let go of the door, they sorta stopped us from getting involved. It was the 90s though so it was a different era.

Or that, still, someone who can hold them in place.

If that is the store's policy, sure. Most don't allow that anymore.

It has been that way in the USA for some years now.

Insurance liability.

Stopping someone could end up in a medical lawsuit if you hurt them, or they claim you hurt them etc.

With cameras everywhere they can just send the police. Insurance will cover the loss?
Tax deductions?

It's safer than having some nut go hostile and take hostages or something for a shirt and pants or something.

If it gets too costly to operate places will just close... some stores here won't let people in and you have a window to order from and pay to get your stuff.
It's frustrating for the security guards as well. My friends sister is a security guard at a chain store and it's galling.
Imagine losing your life over something worth 5 dollars. It happens sometimes.
