Individual in the US can, indeed, do that! They can choose to do that.
In fact, there are a great many places that individuals can go to work out, take free classes on nutrition and cooking as well as plenty of parks and places for people to go in order to work on bettering themselves and combating any issues with "internet addiction."
If they want to, that is. It's their choice.
People who are no longer capable of making that sort of choice, of course, can be "committed" to mental health facilities. But, that requires a hearing with at least some relatives and physicians signing statements that the person is a danger to themselves or others. And, even then, it also typically involves an independent review by the facility's psychiatrists that has to be done within three days or so. (Each State may have some slightly different rules about that.)
So, I was going to post vids of the Uyghar camps and Tienanmen, of course, but... Let's talk about something else.
Nobody hates you, China, or the Chinese people.
I don't know anyone that has any ill will or wishes any bad things for China, the Chinese, or you.
But, "we," "The West," constantly get treated like we're some giant enemy of China by... China.
I just want to relax, maybe read some good books, watch a few cool movies, think deeply about deep stuffs, and play some video games now and then. I also just want everyone to be happy, healthy, to feel good about themselves and their friends and family and to be safe in all things.
But, then... we get threads like this "China is more betterer" and people just insulting, apparently, anything that isn't China.
No person, people, or nation, is ever going to be perfect. And, the bigger they are, the more likely it is that they're going to make big mistakes. It's... like a Natural Law or something.
You and me, and yes we're just people, can make mistakes, too. But, we judge ourselves a bit differently, don't we? We judge our mistakes based on the consequences as well as whether or not those mistakes hurt anyone else, don't we? (We both know we should, right?)
But, for some reason, some nations don't see their own mistakes. They're just more interested in pointing out the mistakes of others in order to make themselves look better.
An unhealthy person is not just an individual's problem. They will be a burden for the rest of the family/community. Thus for the collective good, someone needs to step in and stop them.
Freedom is nice, but as with all things, it can be used for both good and bad.
A responsible parent guides, even when it goes against what the child wishes. And they will thank you for it later.
You don't treat a drug addict by letting them continue on with their destructive habits.
So why should treating obesity and internet addiction be any different?
The problem is that people are protected from having their Rights violated in one case and are not, apparently, in the other.
Don't you think that the US has Drug Rehabilitation programs and that a drug addict can be legally sentenced to have to go through those and pass them, successfully? They may even have to do that while in prison.
Don't you think that a person who is morbidly obese can be helped by programs that are already in place? Don't you think that someone can call and say "This person is so fat that they may die" and that Emergency Services will respond and counsel that person, even removing them to hospital care? Don't you think they could call out for help and someone is going to respond?
The cost of our Freedoms are born by us, collectively. When those become burdensome, we get together and decide what is the best way to respond to those problems. A person's individual freedom is more important to us than in many other cultures, but that doesn't mean we get stupid about it...
No, it's a paper dragon.
