I'm glad that they're going to try localizing games using AI translation.
Taking localization out of the hands of these terrible companies who butcher the translations with western social issues that don't exist in the original writing will make games way better.

Just remember, translators, you brought this on yourself. You should have translated things faithfully instead of injecting your beliefs into it.

Why do you think the social issues won't be put in, when companies like blackrock keep buying into japan?

Double-plus good!

Black Rock can only buy so much.

Language translation models are relatively light weight, running a local/open source model would be more desirable than paying some woke western translation service.

Lowers the barrier to entry to sell your indie game to a much wider market, the cost will make it a no brainer.

Looking forward to it. And hearing Jamie Marchi seethe about it.

Yes. Good. More.

Does it really matter for bigger titles where companies still use localizers or for previously released work where damage has been done already though?

Take Ace Attorney for example, names are so iconic now and filled with so many puns to the point where it'd be weird to read the original JP script.

This was over 10 years ago. It has gotten exponentially worse every year since. And people wonder why society is prolapsing.

Yes, I know.

brother they've been doing machine translations for a lot longer than you think, and they're garbage, and will always be garbage

:steamfacepalm: You really don't know how neural networks work, do you? The reality of it is that pseudo-AI translations will be far more biased and erroneous than human. That it because they are trained on biased data. Human can sometimes see that they are being a biased idiot and stop, while an LLM can not.

No, the AI will not magically change the entire plot to include unrelated social and political drivel, like current translations do. It will just translate it.

Haha. Go ask ChatGPT to translate an anime for you. You people with your naivete. :summercat2023:

AI will be just as biased as the individuals programming it and the environment from which it learns.

If you want a truly unbiased AI your need a non human to create it and a non human environment for it to learn from.

Anything else is just subpar.

…I legitimately hate machine translation with a passion. But I outright hate localizers and localization companies more. I'm stuck between a rock and a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

And all the while Dekinai-chan is giving me that look. That look which says You don't even know English.

Neither does the AI, or the localizers for that matter. Does it stop them? No, why would it?
