I just can't get over the show being full of such cool ideas and deciding to make the main focus of the story be some timid boy with self esteem issues. Maybe the contrast was the point?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, albeit yes as a character she's a bit annoying. The anime itself is good imo, but that's my bias.

Asuka is for the guys that wanna change someone.

Rei is for white knights that want to save someone.

shinji's so unlikeable that those disconnected feelings of a non-protag become homeless and take roost in the side characters. It's why he's so central to the project; he could be completely screwed over by it, as the only person who actually wants to live anymore (because he wants to finish having a life,) and thus the only person who's guaranteed to get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by the project's completion. And none of the sociopaths in his life like him, so none of them care.

Then when he finally realizes this he does the hospital thing; because it's what everyone does to him too. Just not quite as literally as they did to Rei. And he doesn't like it; he can't comprehend any of these people thinking they're in the right anymore. He sees the entire project for what it is, humanity's last eke. And he folds like everyone else; he's some 14 year old kid whose only real qualification is his willingness to end reality in the hopes he gets his life back afterwards.

People like Asuke because she beats Shinji up to satisfy her ego, and it's so easy she starts to fall for her favorite punching bag. Her escape from the hardships of her life.

Sometimes people fantasize that they could be in a relationship without being her punching bag. Like that they could go bully Shinji together, rather than getting rejected by Asuka who is 'above' her own life. As an escape from it. Which is what she envies about Shinji.

also she's definitively weak when the chips are down. when shinji's a problem she runs away, gets drunk, and needs to be carried home. the only 'strong' thing she does is use him as a puppet for her own ambitions.
