Nontraditional NES, SNES, and Genesis games?
By nontraditional, I mean games that don't easily fall into traditional genres like platformers, shmups, beatem ups, RPG's, fighters, ect... I've played all these genres to death on these consoles.

I'm looking for more unique games like Ignition Factor, Pilot Wings, Desert Strike, Sub-Terrania, Shining Force, Solar Jetman, ect...

Messaggio originale di Ray Rook:
NES
Jaws
Town and Country Surf Designs
Excite Bike
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Gunsmoke
Crystalis
Kid Icarus
Base Wars

Sega Genesis Some of these are genres, but very unique.
Beast Wrestler
Toe Jam and Earl
Earthworm Jim
Beyond Oasis
Jungle Strike (Since you mentioned Desert Strike)
NBA Jam
Third World War (If you include Sega CD)
Altered Beast
Comix Zone
Might and Magic 2 Gates to Another World (RPG, but Western RPG + Japanese RPG combined into something weird. This is a port of a port.)
Road Rash
Kings Bounty (A HoMM game)
The Immortal
Mutant League Hockey
Warsong

SNES
Couldn't agree more with Ogre Battle.
Secret of Mana
Earthbound
The Lost Vikings
Clock Tower
Boogerman
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Harvest Moon
Shadowrun
SimCity
That's a pretty solid list of recommendations. The majority of these Ive already played, but there are a few there that I haven't heard or played. Like Base Wars, and Warsong

oooooh
The PS1 port has a different angle of view too. On SNES you only get the angled top down view. On PS1 you get the true top down view. PS1 can also save mid battle map. It's not as important today, but back before emulators and save states, this meant you could save scum treasure findings on PS1, but not on SNES. This meant a lot of people on PS1 had dream crowns way early in the game.

Having owned the SNES and PS1 versions; yeah, I know.

Warsong has a updated version.

It's Langrisser 1 in this combo.

Or you can play the Warsong version. I prefer the Warsong version because the remaster looks like a mobile game.
General Chaos is another Sega Genesis game I forgot to mention. It's super fun.

Yes I've played both. The 64 version didn't have the tarot cards. Some of them were crazy powerful in the SNES game.
No. They are quite literally different games. Not just no tarot cards. They are straight up different games.

Incidentally, Unicorn Overlord is a game that came out this year and similar to that style of game. You have to get a few hours in and past tutorials to really see it start to shine, but it's there.

Yes I know I've played both. You seem confused. I never said they are the same game.

But Ogre Battle 64 doesn't have the card game like the SNES version does. They both have similar gameplay other than that.

* I also mentioned Unicorn Overlord in post #20 of this thread. lol

I might call it an adventure platformer.

Earthbound is a pretty by-the-book JRPG

Harvest Moon did create an entire genre. Both Stardew Valley and Rune Factory are heavily influenced by it.

I suppose it was nontraditional at the time, but these days there are more games like it.
Everything has some category or tag. I think they're unique enough to be called out.

But Ogre Battle 64 doesn't have the card game like the SNES version does. They both have similar gameplay other than that.

I guess where I'm clarifying is where you keep saying version and oddly focusing on something much more minor to both games than a lot of the other content differences between the games.

To me, it seems like you dabbled at looking into the games, but didn't play very much of them. Which is fine... I'm just clarifying.

They aren't different versions. They are different games.

You wouldn't say Zelda 2 is a different version of Zelda 1. It's a different game.

I don't know why you're hung up on this. I put a lot of hours into both.

The card game is the biggest difference between the two. Both have you fighting for towns on a map. Both let you create units and change formations. Both even have a lot of the same types of units.

Both have Ogres and fruit of the netherworld and a story about corrupt people who pursue power by any means.

What else would you say is the biggest difference?

I'm thinking... THE TAROT CARDS it's present in one and not the other. I just mentioned it because I missed it back when I played Ogre Battle 64. I was sad they removed it.
Solstice......Snake Rattle 'n' Roll.....star tropics....mario 2 the odd ball.....air fortress......micro machines......all on NES

SNES......Chuck Rock......Equinox the second game of solstice from the NES......metal warriors.....the legend of the mystical ninja......

some are platformers but they are weird takes......
Reported for piracy
^what even is that comment

also it's not console, but SimAnt was a very unique old pc game

EDIT: NVM it is on SNES apparently lol

ActRaiser and Sim City

+1 for Actraiser. It combined side scroller combat with city building.

There's a new Actraiser on the Switch. It's not too bad.

The remake is on Steam, too.
