In my Opinion, Alien is better than Aliens

As a big fan of that franchise, who watched Aliens a lot more than Alien, I'm beginning to feel that Alien is the better one! I liked Aliens more because of the marines and one liners and special effects, but rewatching Alien made me realize that it's arguably the better entry.

My first point, is that Alien keeps things ambiguous, and I think that the main pitfall of the series is removing the fear of the unknown. What was up with that ship? Where did they come from? How could something like the Xenomorph exist? The point is, Alien absolutely RELISHES in the fear of the unknown, to the point where when I first watched it, I outright refused to try out the rest of the franchise as to not ruin the mystery of it.

My second point, is that the characters are more relatable and believable. Seeing them act like normal people to being terrified and paranoid later on, is a good stepping stone in terms of horror storytelling. I also like how they handle the Xenomorph the best they could! Like the moment the second death occurred, they did the best they could against it, though they were eventually outsmarted and died brutally. Even though the marines were fun to watch, their likeability stemmed from their quirkiness rather than being realistic and relatable.

My third point, is the ATMOSPHERE! Alien probably has one of the best atmospheres I've seen in cinema, and I'd be more than happy to explain why! The immersive sound effects, usage of darkness, and the gritty environment create both dread and astonishment. The mechanical sounds of the Nostromo and it's inner workings bring life to a filthy and grungy environment, and the dim lighting creates fear on what could happen next, and what could lurk in the shadows. The atmosphere of Aliens, while neat to look at, couldn't match the immersive terror of it's predecessor for me.

I think I've seen a couple of the alien movies... they were ok.

I always thought the first one was the best, the second is like terminator 2, good, but doesn't convey the same atmosphere as the original. The problem with horror in particular is you really only get one shot at it, a sequel will never be as scary, so I can see why they went the route they did.

"Alien" is the perfect outer-space monster movie.

"Aliens" is the perfect "sequel" to an outer-space monster movie.

That's why they're different and why "Alien" focuses on all those meaty bits of storytelling while "Aliens" drive by and throws buckets of tasty gravy all over everything. :)

They've kind of gotten worse every installment, with the exception of Aliens that I thought was pretty much equal to the OG.

The scene from Alien made me want to puke. Seriously, nobody wanted to see a sweaty Sigourney Weaver in her undies at the end.

Aliens had Vasquez and Smart Guns, Bill Paxton's "game over man, game over" quote. The movie is also more fast paced compared to the prequel. Clear winner.
