How does this aquarium stock for a 20 gallon long tank sound?
The tank is cycling right now

I'm thinking 1 plakat betta fish and like 10 khuli loaches

Thoughts on this stock?

The general rule is 1 gallon (3.780L) per inch (2.54cm) of fish and seeing the khuli loaches grow to be 3 - 5 inches long, 10 would be way too many and you also need a non-aggressive betta for them all to be civil, healthy, and happy.

The loach should be kept in groups of three to six individuals; therefore, imo 3 loaches and one peaceful betta would be perfect for a 20-gallon tank. :chirp:

Ok, I might just keep the plakat solo. I really want a galaxy koi plakat cause they have longer life spans than long finned bettas
I know from having fish years ago you can't put a betta fish in a tank with other fish they have to have their own tank as they will kill the other fish.

I believe the intimidating and larger appearance of the loach would keep the betta from attacking especially if it is a peaceful betta plus the loach are bottom-dwellers - so no food competition - similar to how a betta and otto fish can live peacefully because ottos are larger but herbivores - shrimp and betta, or loach. would be a death sentence.

The bioload with 1 plakat will be very low for a 20 gallon. It will make things easier for me cause less water changes

Do you also have live plants?

2 male bettas in the same tank will fight to the death. 2 females are a bit more tolerant of each other. Also male betta will nip at other long fin fishs fin.
The plakat will have mansion of it's own. The tank will be outside. It's gonna need a heater in the winterr. I'm expecting algae to grow. Maybe I should add some slow moving snails?

That will help with maintenance a lot. They will keep the tank clean. But you still have to clean it like with a gravel cleaner. Was you going to use a bubbler?

Pick the snails wisely.

Not if the other fish is faster but I have no issues with the otto and shrimp so I will just stick with those myself - no more carnivorous fish thank you not after the oscar incident.
Yeah, might do faux plants this time. Look at my artwork section in my profile. I did a planted tank before for 1 long finned betta. The water was always so clean. Barely had to change water. It's just too expensive for me to do again. Maybe in the future when i get more money.

Being faster don't really mean much in a 20 gallon tank. The stress alone to the fish being bullied would kill it.
Volcanic substrate just killed my wallet last time

Use the 1 inch rule.

1 gallon = 1 inch of fish

Perhaps you are right.

Idky OP just doesn't go with a guppy or something - not as violent.
