Open world space game with planetary exploration
Is there any open world space game that features planetary (ground) exploration as well as space exploration? I'm specifically looking for 2d top-down games.
Thank you in advance.

Well, that rules out No Man's Sky.

Honestly, I'm looking for a 2d alternative to no man's sky.

Starflight for the Sega Genesis! That's exactly what you need.

Can name a 2d top-down. But Space Exploration, I reccomend KSP. BE CAREFULL, if you get it, only get KSP 1, ksp has stopped development :eyeroll: . KSP is a great game, with a MASSIVE modding community. Id recommend it even though it's 3d. You can make rovers, and rockets to transport those rovers.

An underrated masterpiece, though as it's a direct continuation to an actual ST episode, it might be confusing to players who aren't familiar with that episode.

If you can get past not having planetary exploration, Starsector. Perfect game in my opinion.

I've sunken at least 500 hours into KSP, it has rockets, cars, (hard to do) boats, planes. You can mod it so you can have fighter jets, you can have the saturn v rocket. You can mod it so it is the real solar system, you can create your own Curiosity rover replica, put that into whichever rocket you feel like, and land it on mars. You can mod it so it has n-body physics (principia), you can mod it so it looks insanely good.

It's a sandbox game (with the option of career mod, I don't play it that often).

There is SO MANY MODS for ksp that you have your own dedicated software for that (CKAN).

There is iva mods so you can have your own base.

With enough time and effort you can get multiplayer working afaik.

Nothing. But trust me, KSP is so good, you'll forget your looking for 2d. Btw it's really good with a few mods installed.

An oldie but a goodie:

Free enhanced source port of Star Control II. 2d, top down, features both ground and space exploration. Give it a try.

There's also a more modern game in the series:

You're better off avoiding Star Control III, unless you get 1 and 2 and really want to complete your collection:

I also heartily recommend the following:
