An underrated masterpiece, though as it's a direct continuation to an actual ST episode, it might be confusing to players who aren't familiar with that episode.
It's a sandbox game (with the option of career mod, I don't play it that often).
There is SO MANY MODS for ksp that you have your own dedicated software for that (CKAN).
There is iva mods so you can have your own base.
With enough time and effort you can get multiplayer working afaik.

Free enhanced source port of Star Control II. 2d, top down, features both ground and space exploration. Give it a try.
