The northern states actually wanted to deport the black population, not integrate them.

There are many letters by Licoln expressing worries that they wouldn't manage to deport all or soon enough.

Seek the History of Haiti and Liberia - a country created by the US just to dump ex-slaves.

The retelling of History is the only reason people think the northern states are nice and welcoming.

They did hurry to import thousands of high hanking Nazis in Operation Paperclip (look it up). So, they are no xenophobes against aaaall human beings (just most).
