depends on the game. For a game like Furi, I think it was dumb to include it. The game isn't immersive enough to justify it. The game is pointless without the difficulty. Same with something like super meat boy and games like that.

but for most action/adventure games and open world games it's a good idea since some people may have a hard time being immersed in the game if they are constantly dying to difficult enemy. think about old people, disabled people, or bads in general.

I actually think this is the one thing that makes Dark Souls games so good. They have a dynamic difficulty that adjusts to each individual player. they can be the easiest games in the world if you use magic and summoning, or they can be extremely difficult if you do challenge runs. DS games are known for difficulty but they can actually be brain dead easy if you use things like stealth and just summon help for everything.
Play however you like, if gamers get mad about it, that's their problem.
OP very lame move.

[Thoughts on Easy Difficulty]

Controversial topic

This is rarely a controversial subject and actually one of the few topics I find people can discuss civilly on the forums.
Is there any way you could change the title just in case there's a mod who only reads topic titles before deleting things?

Games are meant for enjoyment. Derive that enjoyment from whatever difficulty suits you. Though be warned:

Thanks! This gave me some much needed perspective & gave me some ideas.

We can do the opposite!

No, I don't mean mocking people who chose to make the game harder for themselves but rather praising people for using all the tools available to them by choosing the easy mode bonuses.

Challenges are nice but they shouldn't be forced or pressured upon people unnecessarily.
Besides... if I offered you a FREE SHIELD - it's only smart that you take it!

Let people play how they want.
good for learning games or messing around.

or good if you only care about the story and don't want much of a challenge to follow it.

also not everyone is good at games and games should be for everyone regardless of ability.

im guessing you've never played ninja gaiden, a game known for making it hard even on easy :AOEShield:

Street Fighter 2 Turbo for SNES also doesn't give you an ending unless you play it on a sufficienty hard difficulty.

Pretty much this line of thought for me. A game is either going to be fun or isn't through whatever gameplay difficulties devs decide to introduce. I'm thinking back to older games that didn't have difficulty settings, which were still enjoyable just as more modern games are with my preferred difficulty choices.

I played Ninja Gaiden Black but that was many many years ago when I was a kid and had no need for easy mode. Now I'm older and appreciate more immersive experiences with narrative behind them rather than twitchy gameplay focused games.

Anyways, did ninja gaiden games even have a coherent story? Easy mode should really only be used on games that have good writing/characters/etc.
So, thinking about this further... if a game isn't going to give you the ending for playing on an easier mode - that mode should be titled / called "PRACTICE" mode... not "easy" mode.
There's a difference!

I don't care if others do, but Ill never play on easy mode. I usually prefer normal with some sort of hardcore/realistic mechanics enabled if possible.

Unless its STALKER. In fact, easy in STALKER is actually the most difficult setting because it turns you AND enemies into bullet sponges. Be prepared to unload an entire clip and a half into the first few enemies because they just won't die otherwise. Master (the hardest difficulty) is actually the most realistic and easiest because weapons do more damage across the board. So you just have to play more carefully, but no one has any annoying damage resistance.

There are easy difficulty settings...and then there are easy difficulty mechanics. I find the latter much more insidious.

Is the "Can I play, Daddy?" setting in Wolfenstein really more egregious than third-person cover shooting? They both are designed to make the game less challenging, but only one fundamentally alters gameplay.

In the Arkham games you don't even need to aim to hit enemies. You can play large swaths of it literally blindfolded. I find that much more embarrassing and detrimental to the future of game design than easy settings.
I normally begin a game I have never played on easy since I need to set up my controls properly and make sure what I need to use is programmed in. Typically end up playing the hardest difficulty after a while, learning the game. I never jump in the deep end especially in a co op where my lack of knowledge and level will effect the team, that is just being an idiot.
There should be only one difficulty level for every game. That difficulty level is this: a professional fighter arrives at your home and proceeds to fight you while you're trying to play the game. If you die in game, a 2nd fighter joins in and proceeds to attack you, and so on. After 5 in game deaths, they take your beaten, broken body out and leave you in a dumpster.

What? Too hard? Wimp.
