That takes precedence over everything else, including achievements (which I loathe) and even finishing a game just to check it off a list.
For example I like Witch and the Hundred Knight. I love the anime art style, I love Metallia, and I love the story.
But it's a slog for me to map out every map and level up the hundred knight, and grind just the right weapons to use with the combo attack system. As much as I like it, I've never actually completed the game.
I might go back and finish it someday, just not today.
why? because of a lot of issues i don't want to mention because i forgor :D
Would like to know myself, I have a few games I'd like to know the story or ending but i don't have the drive to do the campaign.
Sometimes i just look up the story on wikipedia, Well for some movies at least.
I don't force myself to finish games. If it's good I keep playing. If it sucks, I ditch it like sour milk. I barely finish any games.
There are times I get "burned out" like Final Fantasy II and I still have to quit the final battle, go back and find some stupid weapon, grind the weapon up levels, and go through the final area again.
Trials of Mana is not that annoying so I'll finish that first.
I also finished Ara fell as well.
I bought Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth back in January. It's a 12-hour game, and now here in mid-May I'm currently 1/3 of the way through, roughly.
What's strange is that I didn't have this issue just a few years ago. I was playing stuff like Hollow Knight and the Dark Souls trilogy - games that run upwards of 50-100 hours for a full playthrough - in two or three months, back in 2018. The argument could be made that I found those games far more engaging than what I've been playing recently, but even then...
I use the Fortune Cookie to select a game from my library I haven't finished, and add it to my "Now Playing" list.
When it's finished, I can go ahead and mark it done.
It feels good to get certain achievements, like the flame icon "You're on Fire! (beat 3 games in a row)".
I still have the achievement "Minion of Bak'laag" (have over 100 unfinished games).
Currently, my Now Playing list has: Kirby Adventure, CrossCode, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, Fire Emblem Fates, and Skyborn.
(RPGs are always rough to add, as they take forever to beat).
I'll beat them eventually. I still play stuff besides that, but I try to get them done as well.
It's like a self-imposed challenge.
You beat me.
My record was 30 years with the NES game Destination Earthstar. I started playing it when I was about 5, and beat it at age 35.
And the only reason I ever beat it was it was chosen by Fortune Cookie from my backlog.
Otherwise, I doubt I'd have finished it.
(It wasn't a very good game, though the space portions were kinda cool looking)
Otherwise, small breaks are necessary so you don't start having a bad time.
