There is a Kremlin disinformation campaign which is even Russian government backed. Putin uses it to shape news not only to his own Russian citizens but also spew disinformation out to the world, specially around America, the invasion of Ukraine, Covid misinformation and also to promote Donald Trump.
It's been known since before 2016.
Fair enough, I will agree that some of those multiplayer online games are riddled in bots and paid-for smurf accounts. I was previously referring to just on the Steam forums.
I think it was mostly China bot attacks of basically spam in Chinese.
The "post waiting for analysis" thing started a couple of years back to combat this.
It really is bad it is just being dealt with so well we don't really notice!
Artificial Intelligence doesn't actually exist and is more just a sci-fi term we tend to use, due to movies, etc.
Really it's "Automated Intelligence" and "Automated Stupidity"
It comes down to the programmer's own intelligence and the data set information it has been fed. It may run through thousands of various scenarios and give you the best one, but it's still limited to those two things. Faking the human response.
AI is not sentient. Yet if that ever comes around in technology, which we don't have to date, it won't even be called AI, but rather AC (Artificial Consciousness).
Thing is they have been pushed down so much there they only have each other to tear at to get above the rest. This has made them hyper competitive compared to the rest of the world.
This is why places like steam have a China branch and many of those RPG games with economies are run like sweatshops... trained to take any advantage and lever it against each other and anyone else they can reach.
It isn't political as far as I know, from my understanding it is just the norm there.
It wasn't a scandal, yes I'm quite aware of thousands of bot accounts which had to be terminated...
ps: Rally Forge received $1,192,832 to advertise pro-Trump, in which their ads where suspended and then their troll farm terminated. I sure hope those teenagers creating fake accounts got that million to do that? Nope...

Or how the US govt spread misinformation & conspiracy theories about vaccines or how the CIA created vaccine hesitancy in Pakistan, etc...

"The Pentagon’s Antivaccine Propaganda Endangered Public Health and Tarnished U.S. Credibility" - Scientific American, June 27th 2024
Amid the pandemic, the Pentagon ran a conspiracy campaign to discredit vaccines—just so it could score points against China. The revelation is a worst-case scenario for global public health"

But alas nuclear countries spamming the internet it's quite old news, and with AI tech around is just going to get even worse, c'est la vie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The misinformation & disinformation rabbit hole of the nuclear countries and their lies is like an eternal abyss.
