Games made for a "modern audience" are stupid
Let's pander to a specific group of people to make the game better. The fanbase doesn't matter.

The "modern audience" doesnt even exist. Hollowwood has been trying desperately to inject normalized lowered standards under the veil of progressiveness or this "modern audience" into the pop culture zeitgeist.
Short term loss for long term gains.
People keep asking "who is this even for?" for a pretty good reason.

Yes, that you have no idea what you're talking about. That's all. The Sims is one of the best selling franchises of all time. It was also developed by one of the biggest legends in gaming and gamer history--Will Wright. There's no way to dismiss it or the huge female fandom and modders that pushed it to the top. You can't make a coherent point.

One franchise, stilted towards women, does not mean the gaming space is filled with women. They play a narrow selection of games.

Who cares how many women play 'The Sims'? It's one game. Are women playing RTS? MMORPG? FPS? MOBA? Fighting games? Grand strategy? No, they aren't.

Look, it's totally acceptable to be a woman in the gaming space. But you have to accept that it's mostly men. Otherwise? You are simply in denial of reality.

I think the industry should appeal to multiple tastes. However, there's a way to do that. Which is not making AAA games for a niche audience.

Want to sell games? Make them for the widest audience. Not the smallest. It's really that simple.

I don't care if a game is specifically for me. But I'm not the typical gamer. I'm just as likely to play an always online f2p competitive game as an offline single-player game.

The real issue is that 'twue gamers' can't stand not being in the spotlight anymore. As gaming has become mainstream they need to gatekeep what once was only theirs. Dismiss "modern audiences" as not true. You can see this process on almost any hobby or fandom that has become mainstream.

Basically little kids not wanting to share their toys.

It's something that I call "hocus pocus." It's probably part of a marketing campaign.

Imagine you're a kid, you're bored and looking for something to do. You watch a video about a computer game, and the team tells you "it's made for a modern audience."
The kid is a cool kid, not a dusty old kid, but it has never played the old games before, or didn't liked them. The kid wants to believe it's part of a modern audience, because it's looking for entertainment.
The kid buys the game because the kid feels included.

If you say that you make the game for the old fans, almost nobody new will buy it, because almost nobody new or current considers itself the old fans. Or maybe nobody new wants to be associated with a group of dusty old fans. It has to be modern, new, cool, and fresh. All "hocus pocus" words which cannot be taken literally in this context, but are likely to impress.


Long story short:
Any audience is a modern audience. It doesn't make logical sense to create a distinction between an audience and a modern audience, unless whatever opposes a modern audience doesn't exist. In which case you shouldn't have made the distinction in the first place.

Still, you have to be overly overthinking matters to have an issue with this. It's really not a problem to say something like that. On average, people will sort of understand what you're trying to say with it. Even though it doesn't make logical sense.

In other words, you only consider "gamers" to be people who fit into your very specific definition. This is also convenient as it allows you to argue that your point is correct because a large demographic of people simply don't count as gamers in your argument.
I think a gamer is a gamer. A person that plays games as a hobby.

If I were to go to a friend's house and pull a deck of cards from my pocket? Chances are good that someone would play a game. Does that make everyone there gamers? No, it does not. It's just a bunch of people sitting around playing cards on a Friday night.

The stats would lead you to believe that Grandmas playing bingo (one night per week) are "gamers". They don't buy video games. They don't own consoles. They don't even have modern computers. Including them (Which is how they get so many women in the statistics) is straight-up bogus.

You are being lied to. And instead of objectively looking at the evidence? You stick your head in the sand. Chanting "DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION."

In my case, I've been existing for some 30+ years.

Woman make up the majority of gamers.
But I reckom you only think high end PC gaming is actual gaming? or what?
Even in that specturm, its more or less genre based, obvious RPGs, Simulations and Builders will be more popular with the female crowd ratio wise, compared to shooters and strategy.

Most gamers (no matter their ♥♥♥) don´t care about representation however, they just want to play a quality game (good gameplay, good story and so forth, depending on genre)

I mean.. you play niche games (the same as me) The avarage teenager or young adult are not playing HoI4 afterall.. they are playing GTA, CS2, LoL or Fortnite.
