Voting with your wallet means sticking to your guns. And at the end of the day many decide playing the game ranks higher.
It's what happened with the MW2 boycott. People preferred to play the game over giving up dedicated servers.
A game can be 'woke' like Baulders Gate 3 - but be a good game
It's when they forget to be a game that it all falls down
Be interesting to see what are the top 3 'modern audience' games in OPs eye....
Female gamers are rare? WTF are you talking about? It was female gamers that made The Sims franchise one of the best selling PC games of all time, and they didn't just play the game but mod it, too.
Maybe you think females are rare because they're not the kind of losers who've made a lifestyle out of gaming and put themselves out there as livestreamers and esports competitors.
They probably do. Social rejects love creating their own insider language to refer to the outside world, sort of like The Silent Twins.
Just make the distinction at least.
I cannot imagine what it must be like, attempting to navigate a gauntlet of unforseen cancelings, hate groups, and boycotting, all with no crystal ball to predict the ever changing nature of the adolescent mind that eternally represents the largest percentage of potential profits in the group.
From an indie perspective it's far different, I'd assume. Solo indie devs, keep following your passions and ideas. Go outside the box and don't conform under pressure. We love you.
There are many examples on the opposite as well.
Often its when you focus on the wrong target audience or the game just have plain poor quality.
A few studios that made AA and AAA titles have ceased to exist because of this.
As for the modern audience.. its a weird debate, that I don´t understand, I rather use the mainstream audience, as that makes more sense.
But then you gave games like Monster Hunter games that always deliver what the fans exactly wants, plenty of western gaming companies also dropped the ball pretty hard or just died like the company that used the make fable games despite the fact Fable is highly anticipated, they just got bankrupt due to lack of new games or other games not working out, formulaic stuff like Call of Duty or Fifa will never die but you can't expect me to ever buy these, it's complicated.
The avarage PC gamer is like 38 years old.
Not all old games were good even in their time, and not all new games are bad.
It's all about a story that's told correctly, not to pander to certain people. That's how you make it timeless.
