Mars 2029...
Apparently, both the United States (NASA) and SpaceX plan to colonise Mars somewhere in 2029.

I think that this is a pretty tight window, given that it's only five more years to go.

What do you think?

Is it possible or impossible?

Would be difficult considering Mars is far away plus has no air to breathe.

With the way things are going don`t think there is anyone capable of launching a spacecraft left in five years.

Send Elon to Mars!!!

Leave him there.

It actually has air, but it is incredibly thin, far too thin for Human Earth-born organics to breathe.

Well, they can't colonise it in that time. A seem to remember the numbers required for a self-sustaining colony is way beyond reach of 2029. But Elon may get a ship there by then.

Uh-huh, good luck with that...

We never landed on the moon. We definitely won't be going to Mars anytime soon.

uhh for actual landing and colonization no, i think thats impossible. IIRC at best speed a space vehicle will take 5 years travel time to reach mars?

i'm not sure SpaceX starship vehicle is going to be for a number of months of testing yet, since it's still losing ablative plates during launch, and hasn't completed its main goal of landing properly yet. last splashdown featured a control surface that early burnt off the vehicle during re-entry.

it would make sense if 2029 is when they begin the colonization R&D in earnest with a prototype colony built on the moon, to test proof of concept and other such prototypes in a total vacuum, and prove the safety and reliability of systems.

I know Elon wants to see this come to fruition before he's in his twilight years but some things can't be rushed. still his achievements are immeasurable up to this point. featuring the largest spacefaring vehicle ever to be built by humans, landing a re-entry vehicle autonomously, and so much more.

Honestly you can give him 1 nobel prize a year for 10 years and thats probably not enough.

A six month travel time, not five years... if the scientific claims are to be believed.

sorry dude, i dont study much stuff past the exosphere of earth LOL

if they've figured out how to speed it up, or i was wrong from the start i'll eat that and apologize, sorry again lol. I just consider our current engines that we think so highly of as complete garbage in terms of speed.

i do a disservice to the experimental, majestic, and highly beautiful and sought after p90 stainless alloys that are used in its construction, but I just think we should have a much more reliable engine to power these space vehicles before we think of something like 'colonization' =p

Apparently the "Falcon Heavy" is the most powerful rocket/spaceship engine in operation.

The real question is: Where do I apply?

Best case result: The astronauts (if it's not completely done by machines) go insane and are left abandoned. They kill each other, the end.

People don't understand what life on another planet would be like. Humans evolved on Earth. Life on Mars would be like a prison, but you wouldn't ever be able to take walks without a spacesuit, and even then - it's all desert with no beauty or aesthetic that contribute to mental well-being.

No starbucks, no media, no people.

It doesn't matter if you're a hardened commando or enlightened monk. You will come back with mental issues (if you come back at all)
